Aaah...comics, glad someone brought that topic up. That just suits semi-literate people like me who just can't make it through most novels, which before I'm 1/4 way through I fall fast asleep.

Out of all the comic series my favourite is the 'Asterix' series by Goscinny and Uderzo, those are hilarious. I also don't mind Tintin, except those I can manage to let go of once I'm into them.

Gee.... sorry Harish, I just really haven't been addicted to Asterix. I wonder whether my dad will buy me some if I do well in my exams......

I don't have too many comics at home, in Mumbai, they're just way too expensive, even second-hand. And so almost all the comic's I've read have been borrowed from friends, who have huge comic-book collections.

I used to read almost all the Marvel super-hero titles many years ago. Eventually I traded buying comics for records. But
I could never stop sneaking a peek at my favorite comics when near a magazine stand. It was Chris Claremont's new version of The X-Men that brought me back purchasing a few titles now and then. Currently I read Daredevil, Hulk (depending on who's writing the stories), the Ultimates (I think it's to be cancelled soon) and the "1602" mini-series.
A few years ago I started reading manga graphic novels and
anthologies (in comic magazine form). Many manga favorites,
I prefer the fantasy titles most, such as Shadow Star, Seraphic Feather, and Chobits.

Archie comics were the ones I used to read - I recently was going to buy one for old times sake but refused to pay $6 for it compared to the $1 or so I used to pay all those years ago.

TinTin and Astix were up there too, although it's been so long that I can hardly remember them.

Now, I try to always catch up with "Snake" and "Swamp". They're just strip comics in the papers and I'm not sure if it would be printed outside Australia but always good for a laugh.

Snake is a favourite of mine, too, but you forgot Footrot Flats, Copago! Even thought it is New Zealand-based, it is hilarious...

I was a 'Phantom' fan when I was younger, and also loved 'Mad' magazine. Does that qualify as a comic?

I spent a lot of my life in the Public Service, and was addicted to 'Dilbert'- I saw so many of his scenarios in real life.

I used to read the classic American comics, Superman, Batman, anything by Marvel.
Then when I moved to Europe, I discovered the art of comics..began reading Tintin, Asterisk and other series.
My son collects the latest hit...a little irreverent guy named Titeuf. He's great.
There are comics for every possible taste here in Europe though..I also collect comic artist Claire Bretacher's work.

My son is also fond of another kid one called Kid Paddle, a bit like Calvin and Hobbes I suppose.

Mad Magazine? I'm sure many of us grew up with it..my grandmother had asked us if we wanted her to pay for a subscription to a magazine as a gift...and I asked for Mad. Little did she know that most of the stuff in there would have raised her hair.

Hahaha, Bruyere, you're right about that. I find MAD one of the most hilarious comics ever. One time I laughed so hard that my mother had to put the volume on full to hear the news !!

I've not read too many MADs, but from what I've read I think they're hilarious! Anybody read their spoof on the Pokemon TV show?

...Why was this subject brought up??

From about 14 to 19 I was a bit of a comic book geek...an absolute Marvel girl...surrounded by people who had no idea what I was banging on about except for my two younger brothers...

My personal favourite was X-Force, which I'm fairly sure they don't even write any more...and then I started filling my backlog of the original X-Men comics...

When I got my first serious boyfriend I decided it was probably time to give the comics away...so my youngest brother now has about 100 or so of my old comics...not to mention my trading cards...

...in retrospect, I probably should've stuck to the comics and given boys a miss !

When X-Men 1 came out I took my youngest brother...I went and saw the second one with one of my sisters and my other brother...and had to take my younger brother the day after, because he was the only one who would be able to understand my excitement ("Look, Matty, it's Kitty! And Colossus! And Jubilee! And...!!").

Tanzen, I loved the X men films, I too found myself spotting the people I'd read about as a kid. My son loves it too...
That Wolverine huh, does a great American accent...

I am finding this trend in redoing the comics as films kind of interesting...I mean you'd think it would be predictable, yet depending on who they give the task to, you see a lot of different ways of doing a comic hero in real life.

Spiderman, I found it very well done..the comic had a lot of character though..and I like the guy they had play in the film..

The Batman films I didn't find that good, perhaps I'd been spoiled over the years with the old TV show that had some excellent humour.

The absolute worst had to be the Hulk...perhaps the worst film I've seen in years. The comic was not that bad, I used to read it.

Tanzen I bet you regretted getting rid of those comics, they'd be worth a fortune!

I don't read comic books anymore, but if you ask me about comic strips, my favorites are: B.C., 9 Chickweed Lane, Bizarro, Grand Avenue, Graffiti, Alley Oop, The Duplex, Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet, Go Figure, and Player versus Player (I already have a quiz on the strip made). I recently bought a "PvP" book. I really love those guys!

Chris Claremont and Jim Lee were the best ever

gotta love some of the non-mainstream stuff as well
Alan Moore and some others

I like manga a lot as well.

Oh dear! yet a further example of my geekiness. When I was a little kid I tried the ‘Dandy’ and the ‘Beano’ but I never got on with them, then I tried the ‘Topper’ loved it and began to read it religiously. I still have the complete run of Annuals from 1966 right up until it stopped in the early 90s. Some of the kids at school were into ‘Asterix’ and ‘Tintin’ but they never really appealed to me. When I was a little older I began read old (the then current ones were awful) ‘Dan Dare’ stories and then ‘The Trigan Empire’ in ‘Look and Learn’.

In my early teens I read a few Marvel and DC comics but there was something about the whole superhero thing I could never really get into, perhaps it was the fascist overtone perhaps it was the idea that there were beings that were inherently superior to humanity (i.e. superheros), I dunno but they were not for me. Then a little later I found ‘Eerie’ and ‘2000AD’ and I was instantly addicted. Just after that I discovered ‘Metal Hurlant’ which was amazing; stylish, bizarre and erotic all at once. The only down side was that it was written in French which was very heavy going. A few years later they brought out an English version ‘Heavy Metal’. As a result of reading it I ended up buying ‘Conquering Armies’ and Corben’s magnificently over the top ‘Neverwhere’ both of which I still have. I suppose R. Crumb is also over the top, his work is very funny but I can only take it small doses, after that he gets a bit repetitive.

When I became a student I more or less gave up comics apart from ‘Heavy Metal’ but there were several strips I enjoyed ‘Mickey Drivel’, ‘Bloom County’, Steve Bell’s awesome ‘Maggie’s Farm’ and ‘If…’. Great stuff. I used to get the NZ High Commission paper just so I could read ‘Footrot Flats’. I had no idea it was still going.

Then in my late twenties someone showed me the graphic novel ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ it was magnificent, here was a superhero story I could relate to! I went on to read ‘Watchmen’ which if anything was even better, ‘V for Vendetta’, ‘Sandman’ and later ‘Maus’. I also developed a taste for ‘Tank Girl’ before it got pointless. I suppose I should also (goes bright red in shame) admit to reading ‘Viz’ for its first couple of years.

I still read ‘If…’ and I have taken a liking to ‘Dilbert’ who is approaching religious icon status amongst some of myengineering colleagues. I am not sure if I identify most with Wally or Alice? Apart from them I read very little in the way of comics these days, someone leant me Sacco’s ‘Palestine’ recently which was sad but very powerful and I read Raymond Brigg’s “When the Wind Blows” in the book shop (naughty me!). I think perhaps my tastes are getting rather dark these days. The last graphic novel I read was ‘Los Tejanos’ by Jack Jackson which I first read almost twenty years ago.

Since this topic states comics, and not comic books (although the posts seem to be of books), I will strike a lone mention for my favorite comic strip...Heart of The City, followed by Safe Havens, and Drabble.

Comics in the newspapers seem very bad to me these days. There are but a few comics I have ever liked:

Calvin and Hobbes
Bloom County
The Far Side

Well, it's mainly novels lying around my house, but I do enjoy the old Archie Comics. I especially like Jughead.

I just love Asterix - in one of my Ancient history classes we talked about how much historically acurate information is contained in those comics,so we were actually incouraged to read it
I also like Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes and anything that´s by Disney.

While looking for something else, I came across an archive of a comic strip called "Big Nate". It seems to be a blatant rip-off of Calvin and Hobbes, there's a girl just like Susie, the dad is similar, but this strip is about 1/4 as funny as Calvin. Has anyone else seen it?

I'm sure all "Bloom County" fans, myself in particular, are very happy to hear that Burke Breathed is bringing back Opus in a new strip!! Can't wait.
