What kind of flowers can melt snow?
One of the earliest flowers to bloom in the spring in northern temperate regions is the skunk cabbage, a fleshy forest-floor plant. Its large buds can melt their way through a layer of snow. By generating heat, the flowers get an early start on the blooming season and may also attract insects that pollinate them.
Skunk cabbages are not the only plants that can produce heat. Their relatives the dragon lilies have two warm parts: a smelly spike that attracts insects and an internal chamber that traps them overnight. By staying warm all night, the chamber keeps the insects active. When they are released in the morning, the lively insects carry the plant's pollen to other flowers. Another flower known to generate heat is the Asian swamp lotus.
