We've just been out formulating game strategy with the new coach, John Buchanan.

Ok, let's get serious now.
What was significant about the selection of John Beck for New Zealand to tour Sout Africa in 1953-54?

I know this one!

He is the only Kiwi to be dismissed on 99 in a Test match, and the first to be dismissed in the 'nervous nineties'.

Ok some questions about Keepers! (These are all First Class questions (no local cricket involved!))

1. Who was the West Indian Wicket Keeper who bowled the no-ball which lost a Test Match to India?

2. In what way did Arthur McIntyre and Leslie Compton conspire to enter the record books?

3. Who is the only wicket-keeper to have ever had a Hat-Trick of Stumpings?

4. Which Keeper once took 1 hour and 37 minutes before scoring a run (Think it's still the record for opening your account in a Test Match!)

5. Which Australian Keeper (In my view Q4 & Q5 are probably the best keepers I've ever seen play) holds the record of 8 catches in an innings.

6. Which English Keeper kept a clean sheet, no Byes(sundries) during an Australian Innings of 659.

As I've not set these from or using the internet I'm willing to concede a few hints if necessary (like dates or venues).

Two wild guesses here.

Q4 Alan Knott.
Q5 Rod Marsh.

Still cogitating on the others...

Fosse4

You've transposed the teams ... it was an Indian keeper who bowled a no-ball to lose the match to the WI.

Q5 - in addition to the aussie the record is now shared by
David East (first 8 dismissals in the innings)
Steve Marsh
Tahir Rashid (who also made a stumping - for 9 dismissals)

Wait, Wait, Wait ! We need to clear up a few things first.

Oleg, in which team are you ? As far as I can see you're not in any of the teams, though you would be a great asset to them. Oleg, if we take you, we will need someone else to balance the players, so make your decision.

Another things. In the last question by Dalgeish, for how many points was it and was it correct. I can then go and change it on the scoreboard.

Rant over.

Can we back up the truck a bit here? Ozzz's answer was incorrect.
Btw, we'll put 3 runs on this one.

John Beck was perhaps the youngest member of the team.

Dagleish can you make the question more specific.

Ozz - neither of those is correct.

Manvinder - I'll accept your answer for Q3, my reference has the name as W.H. Brain (not Brian) who achieved the feat in the Gloucester Vs Somerset game in 1893.
Q6 which was indeed Godfrey Evans, 2nd Test Match vs Australia, Sydney 1946.

Oleg - (playing or not) I accept I did get Q1 the wrong way round. so it should read which Indian Wicket Keeper.....

Aha!!! so you've brought in a ringer eh?? Welcome to the game, Oleg.

If anyone else would care to join in I'm sure they'd be made very welcome. Just jump in and say you'd like to play and Halfbakedangi can let you know which team you'll be on.

Fosse's been a bit quick off the mark with his set of questions as it wasn't actually our turn, but never mind, you Mashers can take a couple of turns to even things up once all the live questions have been answered.

Just to tidy the thread up, here are the questions still requiring answers:

Dalgleish's Question: (for 3 runs)

What was significant about the selection of John Beck for New Zealand to tour South Africa in 1953-54?

Fosse's questions ( 1 run each)

1. Who was the West Indian Wicket Keeper who bowled the no-ball which lost a Test Match to India? **

** After a query by Oleg I think this question should now read:

1. Who was the Indian Wicket Keeper who bowled the no-ball which lost a Test Match to West India?

2. In what way did Arthur McIntyre and Leslie Compton conspire to enter the record books?

4. Which Keeper once took 1 hour and 37 minutes before scoring a run (Think it's still the record for opening your account in a Test Match!)

5. Which Australian Keeper holds the record of 8 catches in an innings.

>>>Now to find a pair of pads that don't cover my face and will get into it.<<<

Copago, you're a good sport!!

Enough of the small talk - on with the game.

I'm not really about enough to join in properly ... that's why i didn't give the answers! (corrected Q1 & supplemented Q5).

I'll try and pop in every now and again though (now i know this thread exists).

Not sure about the Beck question ... if the answer is what i think it is Graeme Labrooy is a useful hint!

John Beck never played First Class cricket before the series.

1. Saeed Kirmani in 1982/84
2. Not sure of what the conspiracy was. MAybe getting each other out in Surrey vs Middlessex. or perhaps keep, bat and bowl in the same match.

Manvinder
Q1. Saeed Kirmani is the answer, he bowled in the 5th test WI vs India in 1983 and for the record has the shortest bowling record of any player in test cricket, he bowled one legitimate ball (0 runs) then the no-ball giving him a test record of 0.1 overs, 0 runs and 0 wickets.

Q2 - not sure about getting each other out but it is the only recorded First Class game where both keepers, kept wicket, batted and bowled. "Legend and the myths of cricket " has it they conspired to do it over the tea-break in the Surrey v Middlesex game at the Oval in 1947.

Well played!

Wait, Manvinder, are you sure that the John Beck question is correct. We'll have to wait for Dalgeish to confirm that.

Next Q for Six Points:

A Player X (oops here I go again!) played first class cricket for five different teams in four different countries and also at the international level.
A Player Y has played as a spinner at the international level.
A Player Z (originally a wicketkeeper) has played for five different first class teams in four different countries and also at the international level for the same team 'A'as X & Y.
X & Y both have brothers who have played first class cricket.
In fact X's brother has represented another country 'B' at the ICC Trophy.
Z has captained the team he played for at the International level but could never win a series at home but did win a series abroad. (definitely not Indian!).
X,Y & Z were all born in another country 'C'
If Y is a nephew of X and Z is Y's uncle, identify X,Y, Z, A, B & C .

Best of Luck
