It has been a goodly number of years since I read "Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe" and would gladly vote for it.

Can I post my objection to " or What You Will" - I had to study it for English Literature O Level (That puts you off any book or play for life! ) (Animal Farm and The Nuns Priests Tale were the other literary works we had to study!)

So can we go with "The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe" for December?

"The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" by C S Lewis is fine with me, Tom. It's probably a little late for me to order a copy from my mobile library, and it's not one I'd particularly want to buy, but I'll read along with you all online.

My only worry about The Lion etc is it's not available on-line (still under copyright) and might not be accessible to everyone.

I'm all for "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." I haven't read it since I was a child and have long meant to re-read it.
For those in the U.S., overstock.com has it for just $3.29.

Ah! when I hit Google and thousands of sites came up listed I didn't actually check to see if any contained the full text.
Looks like I might have to buy the book afterall.

I was under the assumption we were going to discuss "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". I'm ready to talk about it if there are others as well.

Yes, I think we should go with "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," even though it's not available online.

Skylarb,
The January selection is "The Sign of Four," by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The February selection is "The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn," by Robin Maxwell.
Congratulations on the birth of Shiloh.

Indeed, as we all know, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the literary agent for Doctor John Watson but surely it does the good doctor an injustice by placing Sir Arthur before him.
I am new to the book of the month club but I am a fan (dare I say an undying devotee, [go ahead, dare, dare]) of "the best and wisest man whom I have ever known" and I am very anxious to find the feelings of other readers of the Canon. "The Sign of Four" (not "The Sign of THE Four as a lot of American publications proclaim) rates "about 12,500" hits on a google search. The Sign of Four is probably the second most filmed Holmes story, "The Hound of the Baskervilles" being the most filmed movie of all times!
In a time of non-political correctness I find it interesting that Mr. J. Small holds such a valiant tie to his Muslim partners. He is however the vi.....
Perhaps I will hold my further comments until I ascertain decorum for the Book of the Month Club. I'm sure spoilers are frowned upon.
I beg of you, as the gas lamps are lit and the fog rolls down Baker street obscuring Camden House and the evidence of the Hansom cabs fine bay horse, please, please, will someone make a comment so that I shall know how to follow this thread.
Yours truly The Earl of Maynooth The Adventure of the Empty House

Hello, gem19.
It’s pretty simple. We choose a book to read and talk about each month. If you want to get a flavour of things, you’ll find individual threads on our previous choices in the forum, i.e.:-
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (December 2003) The Map that Changed the World (November 2003) Don Quixote (October 21003) Stories of Edgar Allan Poe (September 2003) The Time Machine (August 2003)
And so on back to the Pickwick Papers (November 2002).
This month’s choice is “The Sign of Four” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and next month’s is “The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn” by Robin Maxwell. I hope you’ll want to join us.

When you say threads...I don't much understand...I guess m question is how do I know when new messages are posted, etc?
My apologies for rambling, but this is such a neat idea...it is really all just toally new to me!

Hello tjwtjv
In the index to this forum you’ll see a number of thread titles such as:
The Sign of Four (Book of the Month – January) Book Club(Dec): The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe November Book Club - The Map... Don Quixote - October's Book of the Month
A thread like this will be opened every month for the current month’s book. The “last post” date shown in the index will tell you whether anything has been posted in the thread recently.
I hope you’ll want to join us.

So I've started "Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn". While I am not that far into the book as yet, I find my education especially concerning British monarchy sadly lacking. I don't know if this is the case for others, but the only world history I honestly remember from school was the generic Christopher Columbus, Magellan, De Soto etc. None of my courses ever went into European History. In high school where I went you were required to take a course in state history, but world history was not required.
This book I think will actually be not only fun to read, but I hope an educational tool for me. It's been 10 years since I graduated high school, but not to late for me to pick up this additional learning. Kudos therefore for choosing this book; and forgive any ignorance on my part.
Will the book club be continuing in the next few months? I hope so!
