Sadly Slim Dusty, Australia's own country music icon passed
away yesterday at age 76, finally succumbing to cancer.
Slim was born David Gordon Kirkpatrick in the New South Wales country town of
Kempsey on June 13, 1927. He wrote his first song, "The Way the Cowboy Dies" when he was 10, and started calling himself Slim Dusty in 1938. Slim started the tradition of taking country music to rural areas in 1954 with the Slim Dusty show. In 1957 he recorded his first top selling song
Pub With No Beer". Later that song was to be the first sung by an Australian to be beamed from space. Slim's other gold
record "Duncan" appeared in 1980. All up, he recorded 105
albums and was working on his 106th at the time of his death. The Brisbane Courier Mail was my source for this information.
