The first concert I attended was a Johnny Cash concert back
in early '72. I really didn't want to go to the show but I had promised my folks I would tag along with them. Well, they knew I liked the "At San Quentin" album. Whoever the opening acts were that night, they were hideous. But I did
enjoy the raggedness of Cash's voice. I'd rather have heard
him sing without the background singers and various musical
instruments that seemed to drown his voice out. I do own a couple of the cd's he recorded in the '90s with rap/metal producer Rick Rubin. Those records are amazing, especially "American Recordings" from 1994. I'd love to have heard him sing those songs in concert.

I think that Cash's recent video for "Hurt" was so stunning. Instead of going with some flashy type video, he chose to be shot as he was. It's almost like you're sitting there with him going over his memories. It's a fitting legacy for a man like Johnny Cash.

There are far too few replies to this post!

Johnny Cash was a great global citizen! The "man in black" cared about the American Indian, the "Ragged old Flag", the children that ask "What is War". He was a man who delved the depths of humanity to the extent that Kris Kristofferson wrote a song about him (I started writin' this song about Johnny Cash and ended up writing about Dennis Hopper....)"Pilgrim Chapter 33". Johnny Cash was a drug user that was saved by a good woman, June Carter Cash. Johnny and June's love emanated from every stage that they performed on and when June died it was only a matter of time before Johnny followed the only thing that he lived for.
We owe Johnny Cash for a heap of country greats. Kris Kristofferson (whether you like his voice or not he wrote more country songs sung by the greats than any other with the possible exception of Willy Nelson), Luther Perkins, David Allen Coe (Johhny Cash helped me get out of prison) and countless others.
One of the great regrets in my life is that I never told him how I felt.
cheers

Yes, it was a very sad day when the man in black died. It hurts me in a strange way when the "legends" die since they are so much a part of my childhood memories. I am only 28 years old, but my favorite music is 60/70 country. This is what my grandparents listened to and it brings back the most wonderful memories of my childhood. It brings a tear to my eye each time one of them passes. George Jones wrote the perfect song for this occasion... It is called "who is gunna fill their shoes" . If you have never heard it you should give it a listen.

-Tara... still in mourning

A perfect honor to the Man In Black: Johnny Cash

His soulful music video, "Hurt", was #1 on CMT's 100 Greatest Music Videos. What an honor to The Greatest Man in country music! He went out on top.
