In Argentina, today commemorates the Day of the May
Revolution and is a national holiday. On May 25, 1810,
armed citizens of the cabildo, or town council,
successfully demanded the resignation of the Spanish
viceroy. They established a provisional representative
government and freed themselves from Spanish rule.
Argentina declared itself independent of Spain at this
time. The action of the people in demanding independence
was the inaugural strike of the Latin American revolt
against Spanish rule.
