Opening of the Golden Gate
On this day in 1937, San Francisco Bay's Golden Gate Bridge
finally opened, a grand finale to the long process that
began in 1916. Building the bridge set records thought to
be impossible: the tallest towers ever built, the longest,
thickest cables ever used, and the largest-ever underwater
foundation piers ever placed. The foundation piers were
such a great challenge because they had to be sunk in the
violent, pounding waters of the open sea, a task thought to
be impossible.
Another great surprise was how the Bay Area counties
supported the $35,000,000 construction bond issue during a
time of high unemployment and long bread lines. In the end,
those building the Golden Gate Bridge triumphed over all
the odds working against the construction of this truly
magnificent edifice.
