Have you ever heard of the famous Philadelphia alley,
thought to be the oldest U.S. street? Named after Jeremiah
Elfreth, a blacksmith and land speculator who designed and
built many of the alley's homes, Elfreth Alley is very
compact and the homes very narrow, giving the street a
dollhouse character. Remove the wall facing the street at
Jeremiah Elfreth's house, and you'd see just one room on
each story; you'd also see a narrow, winding staircase
connecting each floor. Nicknamed a 'Trinity,' this style of
house abounds in Philadelphia. (The locals also call these
houses 'Father, Son, and Holy Ghost' houses.)
The oldest houses date to the 1720s and feature mirrors
called busybodies, which project from the second floor of
many of the alley's houses. The mirrors allow those on the
second floor to see who is knocking at the front door.
