Art at the Normandy Invasion
Have you ever heard of one of the most ingenious records of the Allied invasion of Normandy? As the invasion forces gathered throughout Great Britain for the great Normandy incursion, the U. S. Navy assigned combat artists to record the great adventure for posterity. For the young artists,
the challenge was unique and dangerous. During their training period, they lived with the crews of the vessels destined to take part in the invasion; they rode the ships across the rough channel seas and accompanied the troops as they landed on the various beaches. Unfortunately, their
paintings, including any descriptions of their work, were subject to strict censorship. Not until well after the
events occurred did the Navy Art Collection receive and display these historic records.
