World Environment Day
The first World Environment Day was established by the U.N.General Assembly in 1972 to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment - or both our own and future generations. June 5 was chosen because it was the opening day of the U.N. Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm, 1972). This conference led to the
establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
All over the world, people celebrate the day in various ways: street rallies, green concerts, essay and poetry competitions, tree planting, and extra recycling efforts -
to name a few. You might want to check out the activities in your area and do your part to conserve and preserve the precious environment.
