I have logged in to find the background to the Fun Trivia screen is white and many of the display boxes are blank, save for a small square with a white cross in it. I get the feeling my six year old has somehow changed my settings. I have worked out that selecting "View", "Encoding", "Western European (Windows)" brings the settings back. However, the settings are instantly lost again if I move around the site (despite selecting "Auto Select"). Can anyone help? Please?

Graphics not displaying is something that IE can suffer from sometimes. Switching encoding settings around can make a difference to this.

Before delving too deep for an answer to the problem, just try emptying the Temporary Internet Files folder. Go to: Tools > Internet Options. Press the 'Delete Files' in the 'Temporary Internet Files' section. When this folder becomes too bloated it can affect image display.

Your regularly visited sites may be slow to load for a while after this is done. This effect will soon clear up.

See how that goes and post again if necessary.

Thanks for that tellywellies. I tried a few things, but found that the key lay in the "View", "Encoding" options and the selection of "Auto Select". I discovered that I needed to restart my machine for the settings to be retained whilst switching between screens.

Kind regards.
Linus.

Yes I know what you mean. The browser cache has to start re-building once all the image files have been deleted. It often takes a few goes for all FT icons to get downloaded again. Then it's all OK.

Although Linus's post mentioned white crosses I took it to mean red ones? Little red X's in place of pictures is a common problem in IE. Type into a search engine: little red X or IE6 graphics not displaying and you'll see what I mean. Quite a few entries come up. Mostly they are other forums discussing the problem. Suggestions about emptying the cache and playing around with the encoding both get a mention.

Most people never get the trouble but it can be very annoying for some. I think it's maybe something to do with the Internet and locality. I seemed to get it more when I went onto Broadband. In my case, no solution worked permanently other than to use a different browser.
