To me, the movie that scared me the most was called Dolls. It was a 1987 horror movie that had dolls like Barbie and stuffed animals coming to life and killing everyone. I was 16 when I saw it and had stuffed animals in my bedroom. Needless to say, that after watching that movie I got rid of my stuffed animals!

The Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black also scared me because of the little Indian doll that came to life.

Jaws scared me and made me have nightmares about my living room rug, which was blue, being the ocean and the shark coming after me.

The 1975 movie Sunday in The Country also scared me as it was about two criminals who happened into a small country town one Sunday and killed everyone they saw. They were finally killed by a pack of Dobermans. It was really scary and for a long time I was afraid of Dobermans, that is until I found out how sweet they really are.

I saw The Exorcist when they rereleased it in 1976/77 when I was like 5 or 6 and that never scared me. Halloween and Psycho didn't scare me either.

Can anyone remember a film called "The Bad Seed"? It was quite scary to me as a teenager as it was about a young girl who had been killing people. No one imagined it was her as she was a sweet child on the surface. I am talking about the early 50's, when that sort of film hadn't been made.
Of course the original 'Psycho'scared the living daylights out of me.
My poor friend went , the night after her husband had seen it. As she returned home he made the shadow of himself holding a knife at the top of the stairs, and violins were playing. I would have murdered him myself, if it was me.

Mine was a terrible "B" movie called "SSSSSSSS" about a nut case who was turning humans into snakes. I had nightmares for months! I also hated "Bonnie and Clyde"

The Exorcist was released in 1974 DakotaNorth,I'm surprised that you saw it at that young an age.I was 16 at the time and conned my way into the cinema , being under age. There were many people (vicars, nuns lay preachers) imploring us not to go in, which only made it more exciting. As a young teenager it had a big effect on me .It didn't scare me witless but it certainly grabbed my attention and it is still a great film. The movie was enhanced , by the way , by the haunting music of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells"

The top ones:

The Bad Seed (old black and white)

The Exorcist

Magic (older one w/ Anthony Hopkins--but dolls terrify me anyway)

The Stepford Wives

The Watcher in the Woods (a Disney!)

The Changeling

Blood guts and gore don't scare me much. Tension does.

The Exorcist was rereleased in 1976 or 1977 and at that time, I was 5 or 6 years old. My mother took me to see it as I wanted to see it.

The old Pyscho was scary! The newer one was very stupid! Halloween was scary. I am way to afraid to watch The Exorcist. I think I am gonna watch it this weekend at a sleepover for Halloween weekend.

I will never ever ever see "The Exorcist" EVER! Movies like that really bother me, and my friend Corinnie is totally with me on this. Just seeing clips of it on the VH1 special "I Love The 70's" creeped me out to no end. I'm glad I'm very aware of my limits....ANYwho,to answer your question: The Ring and the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The latter didn't really scare me but it did stay with me because I actually cared about these characters and did not want any of them to die. I came close to tears on several occasions and actually cried on one. *sigh* Very disturbing....

Yeah, I saw the clip on I Love the 70s. It kind of bothered me a little too. Anyway I want to see it just to know what it is about, except I don't like not being able to sleep!

DakotaNorth,I'm not doubting you ,I'm just surprised you were allowed to see a film of that nature at such a young age .Did your Mother smuggle you in under her coat ? It was rated 18 here in the UK so I presume it would have been the same in the USA or am I wrong. At the risk of sounding patronising (not my intention) maybe you would of been a little more scared if you had watched it at older age and been able to grasp the intensities of a young girl being "possessed" by dark forces and all those nasty bits that went with it (EEeeeeuuuwww) If you havn't seen it since give it another go ,it really is a very good film.

The scariest film i have ever seen is, The Entity!

based on true story in which Barbara Hershey plays a single California mother who is repeatedly beaten and raped by an invisible assailant.

I didnt and still dont like The Exorcist!

Only "The Exorcist" ever scared me. Okay, that and hearing
Roseanne Barr-Arnold attempt to sing the national anthem.

For me, a scary film is all about atmosphere, bearing that in mind I'd have to go for:
Carnival of Souls - the proper 1962 (?) version. Black and white, no special effects but IMHO brilliantly directed
Ring - The Japanese version, creepy ain't the word! Went to see the remake and walked out midway through - standard teens in peril fare...
Alien - Often imitated, never bettered. The sequels are hardly worthy of the name

In addition to the many well-deserved movies listed above, another movie scared me bad enough to give me nightmares and daymares for a long, long time. That was "The Brood" with Oliver Reed. I saw it in the theatre during the 70's. Recently I noticed that it's been released on DVD. I don't think I have the courage to watch it again...

I'm extremely hard to scare, so the best reaction one can hope for with me is a shudder or something. But there are some movies that very nearly brought me over the edge... those are the following:
=> "Ring" (haven't seen the original, but I'd like to. I found the remake really scary, but mainly because of the way it was filmed, with all these soft cuts and the colors...)
=> "Halloween", when I saw it for the first time. Meanwhile I don't think it's at all scary. But still I like watching it.
Same with => A Nightmare on Elm Street and
=> The Silence of the Lambs
Oh, and there's of course "The Exorcist", but I must admit, I can't really understand why it's said to be the scariest movie of all time. It's scarier than "Halloween", that's true, but, well, maybe it's just me...
