On this date in 1913, 270 sailors on eight cargo ships drowned in Lake Erie because of unpredicted gales. Wind gusts of 80 mph were recorded in Buffalo, NY, and over a foot and a half of snow, accompanied by 70 mph winds, fell on Cleveland, OH.

a timely, related item:

The Edmund Fitzgerald was lost with her entire crew of 29 men on Lake Superior November 10, 1975, 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, Michigan.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call 'Gitche Gumee'.
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early!

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, by Gordon Lightfoot
