Most British Schoolchildren seem to know that that is what the Yellowhammer says. I wonder why that is?

I'm not from Britain, but I'm guessing that the Yellowhammer has a fairly prominent place in British folk wisdom. I wonder who coined that delightful phrase describing the Yellowhammer's call.

Well, thanks Uroborus, that sent me off on a very interesting'Google', I found out that, yes, it comes from English country lore indeed. However, the Yellowhammer seems to be the state bird of Alabama. There is no mention in any USA sites of that call, though.

Thanks for the info, Ren. That Alabama thing comes as a bit of a surprise, as in my superficial research on the bird led me to assume that the bird only lived in Europe. I'd never heard of the bird before this thread! Thanks.
