CHILLING WINTER FACTS -
1. Charlotte Pass (NSW) has the Australian record for the lowest recorded temperature. It was -23 degrees C on 18/6/94.
2. In Vostok, Antartica, the lowest minimum temperature in the world was recorded on 5/2/1892. It was -89.2 degrees C.
3. The Eskimos have plenty of words to describe snow. How many? Well, that's where it gets confusing.
4. Wind chill is a calculation of how cold it feels outside when the effects of temperature and wind speed are combined. A strong wind combined with a temperature of just below freezing can have the same effect as a still air temperature about 35 degrees colder.
5. Hypothermia is a condition brought on when the body temperature drops to less than 30 degrees C.
6. Never give a frostbite victim something with caffeine in it because it can cause the heart to beat faster and hasten the effects that cold has on the body.
7. The largest snowflake ever observed was 38 cm wide. That was recorded in Montana, USA, on 28/1/1887.
8. The cure for the common cold lead researchers in the USA to deduce that putting a soft clamp on the outside of the nose kills the cold virus by overheating it.
9. Insects can either freeze up and hibernate for the winter, or make anti-freeze and keep on moving. The Norwegian beetle uses a chemical called Thermal Hysteresis Protein.
10. For keeping out the cold, wool is better than synthetics. Cotton is even worse.
11. Keeping your torso warm is good for sending heat to the extremities.
