Goodnight Mr Tom is a brilliant book, although it is a children/teenager book, adults will love it too!

I really must second the Foundation series and for really good fantasy, the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is hard to beat. Has anyone here read Dombey and Son. It's a not so very well known Dickens, but in my view, it's the best book he wrote. Another really good series is that by James Herriot. A semi-autobiographical series, it deals with the trials a young vet has to face in the Yorkshire Dales and is really quite hilarious. Talking about Hilarious, what about PG Wodehouse, I can;t believe no one's mentioned him. I think he's the best humorist in that every one of his books is a classic of humour.

P.S. Musn't forget Douglas Adams; now he's a modern classic.

The Count of Monte Cristo is the best book I have ever read. Actually, anything by Dumas. After this, I would have to say, and don't laugh (well, not too hard), Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. It was a great book when I was a child. My mom used it when she tried to get me to eat broccoli and to bring home the point, Don't knock until you've tried it. I still hate broccoli, though.
