Got this straight out of Reader's Digest ...
"QUESTION... Has anyone proved that toast really does tend to land butter side down?
ANSWER... A recent experiment involving 1000 British school children did. In the study, led by physicist Robert Matthews of Birmingham's Aston university, students allowed buttered toast to slide off plates held at waist height. The slices landed butter-side down
62% of the time. The reason, Matthews says, is that as the toast slips off the plate it starts to spin. The toast has to fall from at least 3 metres to have good chance of coming up butter-side up again before hitting the floor."
