It wouldn't be strange to many people that I live near but I've eaten kangaroo and wallaby ... it is a really good meat as it's low in fat.

Frogs' legs are pretty common fare here in France, if you take my cooking tests you'll see some other odd things.
I've eaten monkey I think. In Sri Lanka, but we're not sure.
I've eaten ostrich as it is bred here in France.
My dad ate ants once during the Korean war, on a bet. Said they weren't bad. Yuck!

My brothers ate a rattlesnake...or a rattlesnack.

I have eaten crocodile- quite tasty- with a very distinct flavour. When I was younger I was confronted by an Eastern Brown snake and in a case of 'me or him', I prevailed.. [Smile] He tasted lovely, albeit rather boney, fried in butter...

When I lived in Trinidad, I ate possum. It was tasty but rather bony. I tried a fruit called jamoon which looks like and is related to the cashew. It is has radish red skin (which stains your teeth)with white flesh that tastes like perfume and grates on your teeth! While there, I also ate peewah, which is a bright orange fruit(about the size of a grape) from very tall and skinny palm trees. If people don't have a very long bamboo rod to knock the bunch off, they cut down the tree! They boil this "fruit" (which is not sweet) in very salty water, It is very delicious and has quite a nutty flavour. I regularly ate what is called man-killer figs down there. They are really just midget, red-skinned bananas and they are very flavourful. The reason they are called "man-killer" is because a guy once ate one and immediately died! I have eaten water-buffalo, which tastes like, well, buffalo, I guess.

I have tried moose meat, which is delicious and a bit beef-like.

If I think of anything else, I'll post again! [Big Grin]

I think it's shark meat I ate on a vacation to California. As you know, sharks have no bones in them, so I didn't have to worry about fishbones! tjoeb};>

Once, when I was in Singapore, I got talked into eating a piece of a local tropical fruit called durian. This stuff is really rank. When you cut it open it smells like raw sewage, and it doesn't taste much better. It's a regional delicacy, the locals fairly rave about it. It's supposed to be an aphrodisiac, or so I was told. Didn't do a damn thing for me, except make me retch and want very much to brush my teeth.

Also, when I was a kid I ate some chocolate covered insects, ants and grasshoppers, I think they were.
It was kind of a fad back then. I thought they were actually pretty tasty.

tim10001, i have heard of 'durian' - i think its an acquired taste. in india they have something similar which i think my mum calls 'bor'. i think it smells rank but lots of my family assure me it tastes wonderful. i have not been prepared to take the plunge and try it myself however !!!

i'm with ozzz2002, i ate crocdile last year when i was on holiday in zimbabwe. it tasted like fishy chicken - yes that's the best way to describe it. i really liked it.

a new aussie bar has just opened near where i live where they serve kangaroo and croc, so i think i'll be trying roo burgers soon

Like most of the Aussies (and some internationals) who have posted here, I've don the whole kangaroo, witchetty grub type thing. Obviously, it was a while ago, before my vegetarian days.

Kangaroo meat tastes like low fat meat. Really bland. And grubs are just odd....

....And we're not allowed to eat crocodile, because it's my grandfather's totem....

Dandelions are quite prized here in France, they like the bitter taste and they are good for your health.
I've eaten violets before, quite good.
When I was a kid, I had many women who knew plantlore (be prepared for a quiz on it some time soon!) and one yellow flower we knew had a bitter taste, but we ate it just the same.
I don't know the name any more!

Anyone ever had what we called crackseeds in Hawaii?
These are assortments of little seeds and things that the Chinese and other ethnic groups in the islands love. You have little dried fish that you just eat whole, you have sour seeds that you eat around the stone, you have pumpkin seeds, and all sorts of little delicacies. It's one of those island things and they send them to their friends who are on the "mainland".

I have to say that my kids eat those little rubbery gummy bear style candies they sell at the bakeries here with your small change. I call them "vache folle" candies as at one time they claimed they used mad cow gelatin to make them.
They have little coca cola tasting popping things, they have worms, they have "dracula's mouth" candies. Well, my son eats them and offers them to his friends.

Another thing we ate when we were children was the wax figures with juice in them. For Halloween they had red juice in skeletons! Pretty disgusting huh?

I guess it's realy depending on where you live:

I ate : beaver, bear, deer, wapiti, caribou, bison, etc. in a First Nation banquet.

Frog Legs, Snails and dandelion are quite common here.

Insects degustations are frequent in Montreal Insectarium.

Shark, stingray, wildboar, calmar and ostrich are common in fancy restaurants...

What is the weirdest??? I really can't tell.

Whale meat (as a small chap, long before it was realised that numbers were decreasing). It was alot like lean steak.

Also eaten sheeps brains on toast. Tasted OK but couldn't eat them once I thought about it. This was all just after The War when foods were very short. Parents were just doing their best.

Are all of these items really weird? Seems to me that most of these items are probably the types that human beings (and our other homo and australopithecus ancestors) have been eating for eons!

What is strange to me is to observe modern food eating habits. 2-3 lb steaks, excessive candy and other sweets, processed foods with chemical additives, fast food, etc. Yes, I have tried all of these items I admit, and I find that odd. For example, that compressed, processed squeeze cheese. Is that truly edible? I wonder what one of our pre-historical ancestors would have thought about that stuff...or a McDonald's Big Mac...or gummi bears?

Now that stuff is weird!

That is very true, Jazz ... I suppose any type of meat was or is eaten by our ancestors and people from cultures other than our own. And in many cases not much would be wasted hence the consumption of brains and genitalia, which I would have trouble stomaching becasue of my upbringing. We never ate anything but the meat of an amimal and certainly not the genetalia so that would be wierd to me.

Judging by the uproar that happens every now and then about eating kangaroo many people overseas consider that a weird (or perhaps just ridiculous ... the cute and furry element being payed) thing to eat. There is an English activist, JULIET GELLATLEY, who stirs up the debate every now and then and has even gone so far as to get them banned from some English supermarkets shelves.

I've always wanted to ask about the cheese in a can thing ... how much of it is actually eral cheese?

I agree. Although some products used to be looked with disdain by our ancesters. Not so long ago Snow Crab was thrown away by fishermen and now it's a delicacy.

On the same note: Pre-sliced peanut butter is on its way to U.S. store shelves in test markets.
The new form of peanut butter, which will come in individually wrapped plastic sheets, is the product of more than three years of intense research and 500 different formulas by food researchers from Oklahoma State University.

Ok ok you've all asked for this one, in the broad spectrum of what humans eat and what is considered a delicacy, my Micronesian friends from colleges in the islands tell me that the speciality is, uh oh, the whale sperm that is filtered into jars and preserved.
I used to work for a dept that had islanders from all over the pacific and Asia so we'd hear some good stories!
Caviar isn't much different.

I like the Japanese shops with pickles you can sample, you have no idea what you're eating but it's fun! In Hawaii it was a treat to go to the fancy dept store there, and have the attendants bow at you like in Japan.
Just watching the vegetable chopper demo was funny enough! Seems like it's the same shpiel (can't spell that!) but in Japanese it's precious!

well, I thought that green ketchup they came out with a few years ago was pretty darn strange, but I refused to eat any, so I guess it doesn't count. I DID, however, make my kids finish the whole bottle since they whined so hard for me to get it... [Razz]

thapnut!

That's not so strange! Hubby LOVES a skewer of lung, liver, bacon, and all the other parts, wrapped up in intestine...maybe some bacon in there, too...and then roasted. They eat this in Argentina...and I forget, for the life of me, what it's called! chinchelleda..something like that.

Had fresh blood around, too, cause HE does his own butchering sometimes! He's made blood pudding in sheep's stomach...and other horrid things!

..but I know some think it's just fine!

I just watch... [Wink]
