E-mail, Email, e-mail, email? I was just wondering if there is a standard emerging, I tend to see it written in the various ways.

How do YOU write it?

I use a small 'e' when in the middle of a sentence but a capital 'E' when starting one, or if writing it as a 'stand-alone word as in:

E-mail: tellywellies @. com

I expect even if there were a standard introduced we'd probably all carry on writing it the way we are used to anyway

I write for a magazine and your question got me reaching for their style guide. They prefer email.

I usually spell it e-mail, since email is the Dutch word for enamel. Not that anyone would confuse the two words...

I suppose strictly speaking it ought to be e'mail or E'mail as it is a contraction of electronic mail but no one seems to do that.

I write it e-mail. Spell checkers don't recognize either form (email) and writing e-mail is one more key stroke, but I think that common usage will determine the correct spelling. Writing 'email' presupposes an incorrect spelling of another word that was intended instead. E-commerce is another term that should be spelled with the hyphen to clarify the word. I would prefer that common usage be e-mail.

I write it as e-mail.

Email is a brand of white goods (washing machines, ovens, etc) over here. They've had a name change and don't use it any more but there are still Email appliances around.

I personally use E-mail but I've tried Email, email, E-Mail, e-mail, E Mail and e mail in a document and the microsoft spell checker accepts them all in both US and UK versions.
I've just tried E'Mail and the spell checker came up with Email,E-mail, Emails or E-mails.

So if an English speaker writes to you asking, 'Did you receive my email?' You might send a reply asking, 'What enamel?'

Well, I guess it's a good thing indeed that nobody's ever sent me enamel. Oh, the confusion that can arise from taking over English words in the Dutch language...

Why would you write e-mail with a capital E when it's not at the start of a sentence by the way? Is it a proper name? Or is there some English spelling rule that I'm not aware of?

Leau - it appears spelling rules don't come into Text messages and Electronic Mail. You just have to go with the flow.

Well, I guess it depends which style guide you are using. According to the MLA style guide (the standard for English papers written at most U.S. universities), it is written e-mail, unless at the beginning of a sentence, when it is E-mail.
