I like the classic '80s heavy metal (the hair bands) and some of today's mainstream heavy metal.

canto-pop...just kidding

jazz is my favorite
specifically big band swing

although I'm very eclectic with my tastes
I do like many other types of music as well
hard rock, heavy metal, rap, R&B, pop,
trendy, mainstream, ska, hip-hop, funk,
country, bluegrass, etc.

you name it, I probably like something in that genre

I'm with you, LA. Although I'm probably happiest and most at home in the folk and alt country world, I also listen to classical, jazz, world beat, R & B, classic rock, blues, big band, pop, rap, you name it. One of my happiest musical memories is listening to a folkfest session with a blues guitarist, a country vocalist, a gospel group, two drummers from Ghana, a vocalist from Madagascar, and a bunch of Native American women from a Mohawk reserve, who did traditional music. They were all playing and singing together, and it was wonderful.

-Rock (not sure how I'd describe the type of rock I like: slightly punk, slightly alternative)

-And the type of music that is Queen, which is in a league of its own, really.

-Musical theatre cast recordings. Honestly...if you're looking for some of the most amazing voices of all time, look no further.

ah...yes...Queen...underrated band

'Radio Ga-Ga' at Wembley Stadium
100,000 people clapping along...that looked fun

musicals?
I thought the question was favorite kind of music?
maybe even favorite band could creep in a little bit.

there are so many kinds of music used in musicals
it's tough work through them all.
'Rent' is a rock opera
'Phantom' is that classic Weber musical
'Swing' has swing music
'My Fair Lady' isn't that Lerner and Lowe?
'Porgy and Bess' jazz...Gershwin was a genius

maybe we'd get a better sense if we knew what musicals you like and which ones you don't.

must agree that you find some fantastic voices
on West End and on Broadway
just look at Donna Murphy
(if you don't know who she is...what are you doing? go get a recording with her on it)

Fair enough...good point. I just said 'musical theatre cast recordings' because I have such an assorted accumulation of them. But if you want me to root through them all...

...Rock opera, the Webber style, the Alain and Boublil style (quite modern but typically theatrical, too). Although jazz itself isn't terrible, I have to say I dislike the 'Chicago' style.

Agony-
I'm electic as well, but folk and country are closest to my heart. Among my favourite artists are David Francey, Guy Clarke, Gillian Welsh, the late Colleen Peterson and John Prine. I also enjoy house concerts because of the comfort and intimacy of the surroundings. I enjoy and respect great songwriting, complimented by beautiful harmonies.

Roots music gives me a greater sense of community and connection to the world.
