Can't be anywhere near as boring as my town. We don't even have a leisure centre or a cinema!
You'd have thought Leeds would have more. It's the third biggest city in this country and yet the town centre is tiny. We're mainly made up of housing estates. And what's more, the town centre isn't in the centre. It's sort of towards the north east of the city.
Although it's better than Marsaxlokk. All that has is a nunnery and a harbour.

As a New Zealander, I might have to fight a duel with you over Kerala being "God's own" - "Godzone" is, or at least used to be, the Kiwis' nickname for their country. I guess there's a fair amount of wishful thinking going on there, although it does remind me of a comment that went something like: "As far as natural scenery goes, Kiwis are always trying to prove that they've got the greatest, biggest, best something-or-other in the world. In fact they don't, but they squeeze an awful lot of second bests into a small space." That's probably a fair comment. Glowworm caves, mountains, mountain ranges, geothermal activity, volcanos - NZ has them all!
One of the most amazing things I've seen is the sky at night out in the sticks (i.e. miles from anywhere). The Milky Way is so bright you can hardly see single stars - they combine into a luminous band. This highlights the fact that in a country with four million people and a comparable land area to the UK (population 60 million), the concept of "getting away from it all" actually means something. The countryside simply doesn't generate enough light to interfere with the stars.
The views are stunning, too. People in the UK, where I live now, have a much more restricted idea of "view" - it's amazing the difference 3,000 feet of elevation makes!

As for New Zealand, I've only been once, and it seemed fairly crowded in the cities. I guess the difference is the terrain... NZ is a lot more mountainous, isn't it? The UK's just fairly crap, though, I know... massive population for such a small island.

Well I'm from Tasmania. And yes, there is such a thing as the Tassie Devil, a cute critter, let me tell you. Although I hop back and forth between Calabria (Southern Italy) and Tassie, I like to think as both places my home. For the last 30 odd years, I've had the experiences of both cultures which, in my opinion is a tremendous boost into understanding how different societies exist and evolve. Launceston is a very pretty city on the mouth of the Tamar River, known for its wine industry and other culinary goodies. Here's a little info: http://www.tased.edu.au/tot/ne/launceston.htmlOn the other hand Tropea in Calabria (where my other house is) has the most gorgeous coastline I've ever seen. http://www.tropea.biz/index_eng.htm

I'm from Germany. I was born in Lüneburg, which is a medium-sized town (sorry: city) about 60 kilometers south of Hamburg. My mom's family is from Munich (that is, my mom was raised in Munich; originally, the family's from Silesia, but they had to flee to Munich during WW II), and my dad's from Berlin (also not his birthplace, but his family lived in Dresden when the bombs fell...). My parents both ended up in Lüneburg, and as I said, I was born and raised there. Now I'm back in Munich, which had always been like a second home to me. I'm studying here, but I suppose I'll stay. There's so much to say about Germany, but I won't go into detail here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, and if you ever get to Munich, send me a note

I'm from Albuquerque, Ne Mexico, USA. Most poeple in the US think New Mexico is foreign but it has been one of the 50 states for almost 100 years! In fact, the Capitol (Santa Fe) is the oldest of the 50 state capitols with its history going back to the 1560's. Santa Fe is a pretty good meca for artists with museums and galleries galore. Its also a great place for tourists with a lot of money to spend. Albuquerque is the largest city in the state allthough its populatuion of around 600,000 residents is not staggering (particualry from the perspective of those of you in heavily populated countries like India). Nonetheless it is a stark contrast to the mostly rural commuinites around the state. The best thing New Mexico has going for it is the environment. The weather averages right around 70 degrees (most of the time) and rainfall is not a word we are familiar with. Add to that a real diversity in ecological zones gives us both great forested mountain areas for camping, and arid lands perfect for a golf course. There are a lot of things for people who like the outdoors which is what keeps me here. For those history buffs out there, there is plenty here, as well. The old Santa Fe Trail came up the middle of the state following the Rio Grande. This route was used by the Sapnish as they searched for "El Dorado." My favorite story, however, is Billy the Kid who lived and died in the southern part of the State. So there is a lot here, unless you like the exciting bustle of city life, in whcih case I would call upon anyone from Pheonix to chime in. Its great to meet everybody and learn about your homes!

Wow - very interesting, Brinjal. Are you returning to NZ because of the situation in Zimbabwe? And as an insider what can be done about Zimbabwe as a whole?

You're fortunate to live in such a beatiful place - though I don't envy you for the long, dark winters. I read somewhere that Lofoten was voted by Norwegians to be the most beautiful location in Norway, and they should know! I'm fortunate in having sailed all round the Lofotens, when there was still a lot of snow around and almost constant daylight. I even bought a Lofoten Teeshirt!
I love the winters; the darkness and when its clear sky to watch the stars and the snow. Yes, Lofoten has been voted to be one of the most beatiful places in Norway (I remember reading that as well )and lucky you to have sailed around it. I've always wanted to do it, but never gotten around to it.

Are the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights) visible from the Lofotens? They would certainly be a winter attraction. I've only seen them once, but watched them dancing over the sky for hours, one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. We were on a real sailing yacht in the Lofotens, by the way, not a luxury cruise ship, so experienced the wind and waves 'properly'!

" We were on a real sailing yacht in the Lofotens, by the way, not a luxury cruise ship, so experienced the wind and waves 'properly'!"
That has always been my dream...to be at sea,and experience the ocean on a real boat and not a big liner - with no movies, swimming pools or Vegas style buffets.
I often wonder what life was like for those sailors who navigated by the stars...how quiet it must have been and how much better you'd be able to know yourself. Oops...having an 'equator moment' there and got off subject a bit!
I'll go along quietly now.

I saw the Causeway about a year and a half ago. It is absolutely breathtaking. It was one of the highlights of our 3 week tour through England, Wales, Ireland (North and South) and Scotland.

I was born in Sydney Australia, lived in Lithgow near the Blue Mountains, then Mt.Druitt western subs of Sydney. I've moved around a bit; Brisbane Queensland, Bonshaw on the border between New South & Qld, then Texas, same area, back to Brisbane, now in Toowoomba Queensland. Best place in the world and hope never to move again. I love Australia and often think what luck to have been born here instead of some poor third world country. We really are so lucky here, regardless of our political sways, wouldn't matter if we have Labor or Liberal or Democrat or National or Green in Government, this would still be a great place to have our kids grow up etc.
