I am currently without credit cards, mine have just been cancelled by the card provider as someone used one of them on Sunday to charge more than £300 (about $500 US) to a online gambling company. I knew nothing about this as I haven't recently received a statement, one is due any day now, I received a letter from the CC company telling me to telephone them urgently, once my identity had been confirmed they told me about the charge to my card which was not within my normal spending practice.

The reason for posting here is as a warning to others, I almost never purchase online, just a couple of flights booked, I do not store my credit card details in a computer.

The CC company representative said that some people have programs which punch in random numbers until they hit a valid one. Be warned, check your statements carefully.
