OK i have read through the Tatoos anyone so i thought i'd start a Belly Button Ring opinion thread

My 14 year old daughter has wanted one for over a year now

I'd love one and a Tattoo but dont think i could bear the pain LOL (I hate needles i'm a wimp! )

All of her friends at school have them and they have had no problems with infections etc, But i have heard some "horror stories " about them.

I did take her last year to have it done ,but the place i took her refused to do it as she is quite "petite" for her age , however she has grown a bit since and is nagging me again to let her have it done!

Any advice would be welcome

Do any members here have one?

My brother's girlfriend has one and my mom almost passed out when she found out!

The only advice I could give: don't tell your mother in law.

My sister has one, she didn't have any issues at all with hers. One of my friends got one and she did have some problems, but she wasn't cleaning it properly. I'd have her wait a bit longer if it were my daughter, but you know your child better than anyone.

Kudos to the company who turned away a profit rather than perform this piercing on a young adolescent. Given that they even had parental consent to carry out the procedure, I applaud them!

I'd say go for it. That she still wants one after a whole year shows it is something she has obviously had time to think about and therefore isn't a fad...as long as she keeps it clean and you go to a reputable place (like the one you went to before) then you should be fine. Besides if she ends up hating it she can always just take it out - no harm done!

I am actually thinking about getting a belly button ring myself, but the problem is that I am really really scared of anything that looks like a needle. (when I have to get a vaccination I always start to faint some days before my appointment)
My cousin has one and she said it wasn´t very bad. She didn´t have any problems with it, but she cleaned it a lot (I think more than she was supposed to) That is probably the most important thing if you want to avoid an infection. Well, maybe I´ll have the guts to do it some day, because I think it looks very good, and it´s not as permanent as a tattoo.
I believe that 14 is a bit too young to get a piercing, but that´s just my opinion.

when my friend got hers done she said it was a huge clamp type thing rather than a needle - just to allay your fears

She could of course have been exagerrating somewhat, she had a habit of doing that!

you're most welcome!!

I would love to get mine done but remember getting my ears pierced and that was fine - it was the cleaning that made me feel faint. I think it was because I could feel this metal stuff moving around in my ear - what a wimp!!

I don´t even have my ears pierced, so I guess I am more of a wimp than you are.

I have a lot of friends with belly button rings. My friend brought me along to this tattoo and piercing place, to see what it is like. When she got her's pierced, they took some of her skin, in the upper part of her belly button, clamped it down, and stuck a needle though. Then they put the stud in, and that was all. She said it didn't hurt that much, you just have to clean it a lot. I'm thinking of getting one, but maybe just a barbell. You also have to be careful with your clothes. You can't wear any tight shirts or sweaters after you have it pierced. The tightness of the clothes could cause an infection. So if your daughter gets one, it would be best to wear baggy shirts for about a month. Baggy clothes also help with not catching your clothes on the piercing. It really hurts, and your belly button is so tender from the pirecing, it could rip. But what ever deicsion you do make for you daughter, it'll be for the best.

Terrified of injections! Ears pierced ONCE, they went sore but let them heal up. No chance of me having them redone, or have my bellybutton pierced or a tatoo! No thanks!

If you think that your daughter will be responsible in keeping it clean, then you might want to let her give it a shot. One of my friends had it done a while ago, and she loves it. Me personally, though, I couldn't do it. I am VERY squeamish about my tummy and belly button and rarely let anyone touch me there. I'd much rather get my tongue pierced! That way, when I go to work, I could just wear a clear one in my tongue and no one would know it was there!

If you're going to let her do it, I'd suggest making sure there isn't a unit in gym class at school that's going to cause problems (like a very physical unit or swimming).

Thanks for all your comments

I have managed to convince my daughter to wait a while longer (phew!)

And she has a brand new computer to keep her busy at the moment

I just had mine done recently, it's fine and it only hurts when they freeze it. Also, you're lying down for the whole thong, so you dont see any needles. I was lying down and the woman was chatting to me, and then it was just done before i knew it. I dont really think 14 is too young, because my sister is 13 and she had hers done at the same time, and she's fine.

I don't even have pierced ears and wouldn't dream of getting my belly button done. I guess I just fall under the "whimps of FT" catergory... The other day my sister found an article on the web on how somewhere folks were getting tiny sheets of metal (in the shapes of hearts, etc.) implanted into the membranes of their eyeballs and it was all a rage (in the Netherlands or somewhere). Yuck.

Yep, that could very well be in the Netherlands. My mom mentioned it this morning and I got sick just thinking about it!

Can anyone explain how someone with an "innie" (IE a not protruding belly button, like me, who just have a deep depression in the stomach) can have a belly button ring inserted. (Not that there is any chance I would even consider it!)

I saw a picture of one of those eye things, and the eyeball around it was all inflamed and red. Very attractive(!)

Eyes are very precious things, I cannot believe that anyone would risk their sight for such a thing, I am horrified.

I have one, and it hurt like crazy. I actually fainted right afterward. Yuck. They were nice about it, though. I got it done in Greenwich, without parental consent.
