In one of my trivia quizzes there was a question about a "Deemster" I found the answer of where it was but not what it is?
Please could someone explain what it means?
Thanks.

I think it is someone like a Mayor. The head man of the island. I have no way of checking and we have no one from that island in FT , I think! (mind you we have some authorities on islands, who may help)!

The only thing I could find out about it was the following:

Quote:

A Deemster is a Judge in the Isle of Man, who, without process or any charge to the parties, decides controversies in the island.

The office of Deemster is a very old one, though the list of names of known individuals to hold the office "only" goes back to the early 1400s or so I think. You can find out a little bit more about them on this link to the site of a firm of Manx lawyers.

http://www.dc.co.im/iom-legal.htm

I think the senior Deemster also has some responsibilities in the Manx Parliament and so usually has to be able to speak (or at least read out statements in) Manx gaelic. You can probably find out some more about that if you google against the name of the parliament, "Tynwald"

You're welcome PF. I suppose if you gather together people who have nothing more in common than that they are interested in sharing odd facts there's no limit to the useless bits and pieces we can all acquire!!
