Just how do you place accent marks over letters, such as the one over the e in risque, on a key board?

HI, I have found one method is listed on the help thing in MS Office and I've printed it out for myself. But it's not for the faint hearted. If you do a Ctrl accent desired plus the letter you want it on, see if it 'takes'.
Thus, ctrl, grave accent, up on your top left pinkie, then the e for example, see if it works.
It isn't working on this screen though.
For a word doc it might do though.

Do you mean using ascii codes? You can use this site for some of the codes.

Don't know if they'd work in the forums (or other type places), but they should work in documents.

The codes can be found here.

They can be used in web-pages, but unfortunately not on the forums, for which you'll have to copy and paste them from some external site.

Another alternative would be to use the Windows Character Map, which can be executed just by typing 'charmap' in the 'Run' window, or by running a quick search for 'charmap.exe'.

You can also use the alt key along with the numeric keypad for instance alt - 130 gives é 226 gives Ô and 212 gives È , at least it does with XP as an operating system.

I use º (alt+0186) all the time in referring to degrees for recipes.

Windows comes with a handy utility called 'Character Map'. I find it easiest to copy and paste the accented letter or symbol from that. ® Ø ä é î ú ü These and many others are all there.

I think it's my keyboard settings, but all I have to do is type an apostrophe followed by a letter and it's automatically transformed into an accented letter. So 'e turns into é and "a becomes ä. If I want the apostrophe instead of the accent mark I just hit the space bar after the apostrophe.

I use the control button with the apostophe and then the letter you want, like "e"clair

I hold down the Alt key and type the ANSI code, like Jar_’s 0186 for the degree symbol. There’s a fairly complete list of ANSI codes here. Some time ago I got a mousemat from the “London Review of Books” with the various codes on it. It’s not as pretty as the mat I used to have, but it’s very useful.

I use the ALT+Ascii code number, eg ALT+0128 gives €, ALT-0232 gives è, and ALT+ 0233 yields é etc...There are loads of sites with complete ascii code listings, and I think they should work with most systems. I know the most common ones by heart, and refer to the chart for ones I don't use too often, like the German 'umlaut'.

Another way to do it, if you just want to accent a letter, is to hold down CTRL+ALT+ the letter key (or CTRL+ATL+SHIFT+ the letter key - if you want uppercase).

This only works with accenting vowels though but it's not limited to certain programs (as far as I know) and it saves remember codes for certain characters or using the copy & paste method.
