What genre of music (if any) do you listen to when you're in your (or any) vehicle, travelling? Do you have a station that you listen to no matter what, or do you flip between stations to see which is playing something you like? If you have a favourite station, what about it appeals to you?
I like listening to rock 'n' roll when I'm driving. Our local station, K-Rock, plays classics (Pink Floyd, the Stones, AC/DC) and "new rock" (Nickleback, Creed, Linkin Park, the Offspring, Audioslave, etc.). This is my favourite station, inasmuch as I have one. The DJs are funny, and because it's local the weather, news, and events that they discuss have more meaning for me, personally.
When it's commercial time, or when K-Rock plays songs or artists that I don't particularly like, I don't stick around. I switch to Joe FM, another local radio station that plays classic and new rock. (This station was up until recently Country 96, until the CEO had some market research done that concluded that there wasn't much of a market for country music in this area. Still, a vocal minority of people were upset at the loss of the only local country music station and are trying to petition a change.) I don't find the DJs' banter on Joe FM to be nearly as witty, but they're new hires and haven't really had a chance to click with one another. Maybe one day this station will be more appealing to me than K-Rock, but for now...
When both of these stations are playing songs I don't care for, or are having commercial breaks at the same time, I switch to 100.7 (I forget the name of the station) which broadcasts out of Watertown in the US. They play the same genre as my other two stations, and the selection is just as good, but because it's not a local station the reception is a bit poorer and the news/weather/etc. doesn't pertain to me at all. This is just a fallback station.
The other station I listen to is Oldies 960, on the AM band. I'm not a big Oldies fan, but it seems to be a happy medium when the people in the car can't agree on what to listen to.

Being the musical snob that I am, I avoid corporate radio like the plague. I only listen to CD's in the car. My favorite station is a small station called WOXY out of Ohio, but I can't pick up their signal in the car. I prefer 80's Alternative music when I'm driving, but if I'm driving during rush hour, I listen to Counting Crows or something equally soothing.

I usually listen to 89X (88.7) or the WRIF. Those are the only stations that I like to listen to that I my radio can pick up. They are punk, rock, alternative. I really like it. Or I usually tune into 89X at 7:00 pm for the People's Choice. It is where there are 2 bands who ahve really good songs, and the audience calls in and votes for the better one. The better one with the most votes, wins, and competes with a brand new band the next night. The band keeps on going until it defeated by another band. It is really good. I usually call in, and vote. Or sometimes I listen to CD's in the car. AFI, Evanescense, Korn, Saliva, Trapt, and Smile Empty Soul are in my glove department right now. If I'm out in the county, I listen to CD's that have really long songs, but If I'm in the city, I usually listen to something more hard, and fast, and upbeat.

On the go, I never listen to the radio. Radio was fine when they used to allow us to listen to it on the job. I would even take the mindless Top 40 drivel over silence on the job. I can't put up with it on the road though. Radio is too segregated for me, there just isn't the mix of musical genres and sub-genres on the airwaves that there should be. Mix tapes is the way I go, the more variety of genres, artists and songs the better. Surf instrumental, hard rock, alternative, ska, funk, garage, rockabilly, zydeco, blues, soul, prog rock, punk- I don't care what the genre is or what decade the music's from as long as the tune's are great. Tapes are for venturing out of town and on the open road. I play cd's when driving around town. I usually pick surf instrumentals for local driving, there's just something about the reverb from those surf guitars that makes creeping through slow traffic less annoying!
