Don't know if this constitutes a Controversial post but one of the London Boroughs is actually taking out Speed Bumps, cycle ways, bus only lanes and making parking the car easier. (doing away with traffic calming measures!) and finding traffic flows better through the borough!

Can't get to the actual story but http://www.timesonline.co.uk/ and the search for speed humps will get you there (you can't copy the site, can only print it out).

Hooray for the removal of speed bumps - I detest those humps which jar the spine even at low speeds and Bus Lanes (empty for most of the day) and Cycle Tracks on the road (Cyclists use the pavement(sidewalk) most of the time as most pedestrians know to their cost!).

Does anyone think these things on the road are a good thing for anyone?

And while on the subject - Isn't it time that Learner Drivers were taught the etiquette of good driving as well as the theory and practical. (First signs of Road rage or aggressive driving means an immediate FAIL) - and no need for speed humps and other measures.

I live in a quiet residential neighborhood full of families. If there were a petition for speed bumps around, I'd take it around, sign it and get signatures and post cops at every corner until people got it into their heads that they can't drive the way they like. All of my neighbors would endorse it too. One of my neighbors gets their plate numbers and reports them, to no avail. plus he suffers retribution as they're sure it's him and some of them speed up and make obscene gestures while driving by.

I know these things should not exist, but if you saw the idiots driving past here at fifty mph, you'd realize it's the only way sometimes. If it saves some innocent lives, then I want them there.

My parents' neighborhood has them now, it is now safe to play in front of your house. People were using that as a shortcut to avoid a traffic light, they aren't now.

Of course we must teach our kids to respect the cars driving by, and the cars to drive properly, but it's not happening, and my kids aren't going to be part of their obstacle course.

I also ride my bike, and I might add that cars need to respect that lane, for our children's sake as well as older folks like me.

Speed bumps save lives around these parts.

We paid to have them in the estate where I live, if I could I would double the number. There are children playing in the road, what we don't need is some idiot coming around the corner at a speed which would mean they couldn't stop.

Well we cyclists know that local authorities mostly only pay lip service to providing cycle lanes. They paint a line along the road where cyclists would normally ride anyway and Hey Presto! we have a cycle lane. This probably fills some quota or other required by the government to provide cycle paths. I've seen these lines as short as 100 yards. As soon as the so called 'cycle lane' looks as if it might inconvenience motorists in any way, it just ends. This is usually at places of dense traffic where cyclists could do with a bit of separation from cars. No wonder cyclists take to the footpaths sometimes. To stay on the road might be (and sometimes is) to their cost.

California is paying lip service to bike lanes, they've made progress from when I cycled 15 miles a day, but now, the sheer size of the vehicles is frightening and the lack of control over them. People seem to lack awareness of their surroundings in an SUV or monster truck, they use the bike lanes to turn long before it is really their turn.

When the younger kids here learn to drive, they tend to drive like idiots. I want speed bumps as do my neighbors.
One thing I think is that even a young driver who is learning to handle his or her vehicle, he or she would probably never get over hitting someone...it's not a lesson to be learned that way for anyone.

My point exactly - TEACH THE IDIOTS TO DRIVE SAFELY !
I've travelled with my kids in their own cars and I'm going through the floor braking, in the passenger seat , they accelerate to go past!!!!

I will concede (having read copious amounts on the subject) a large hump and I mean a large hump! one that will ground (Have the vehicle stuck on top of it} anything over the size of a small van) entering a street or road might just deter some people but it has to be as you enter the street or road from the main road . Then again I think the residents might complain if their delivery from Ikea couldn't be delivered and you couldn't get a Fire Engine or an Ambulance up the street.
