Some statistics, prior to this weekend's game at Highbury, Arsenal v Manchester United: Code:
Longest unbeaten start to a season: Arsenal play their 30th game of the season this weekend, and a win or draw against Man U will break the record for the longest undefeated start to a season in the top flight. This is the current league table: Arsenal 29 22 7 0 57-19 73 Chelsea 29 20 4 5 52-22 64 Man U 29 19 4 6 55-29 61 Liverpool 29 12 9 8 42-31 45 At the moment they have equalled the record set by Leeds United in the 1970s, and Liverpool in the 1980s. For those of us who are curious, these were the league tables back then: 1973-74 : 16-Feb-74 Leeds United lost to Stoke City, who were mid-table, 2-3 away on 23-Feb-74 (I remember that game very well) Leeds Utd 29 19 10 0 51-16 48 Liverpool 28 16 7 5 37-23 39 Derby Co 29 11 10 8 35-28 32 Ipswich T 28 13 6 9 47-42 32 1987-88 : 16-Mar-88 Liverpool lost to Everton away 0-1 on 20-Mar-88 (thank you Everton!) Liverpool 29 22 7 0 67-13 73 Man U 31 16 10 5 48-30 58 Everton 30 15 8 7 41-18 53 Nottm For 28 15 7 6 52-26 52
Longest unbeaten sequence in a season: If Arsenal win or draw their 30th game, they will tie a record which has stood for over 80 years - the longest unbeaten sequence in a season. In 1920-21, Burnley lost their 3rd game of the season on 4-Sep-20 (they lost their first 2 games as well), and their next loss was on 26-Mar-21, their 34th game of the season .. of the remaining 8 games, they lost 2 and drew 4, but finished the season as League Champions.

As much as it pains me to say it, I cannot see Arsenal losing this game especially at Highbury. United's defence isn't solid, and makeshift players are being utilised in these positions. Keane has played centre-back, and Giggs left-back in the last few weeks and Thierry Henry and co. will capitalise on that. United are always capable of scoring goals, but that's never been a problem unlike the defence.

This is one game Arsenal can't afford to lose. It doesn't bother me if they drew, they just need to stay unbeaten. I hope Arsenal wins!

I think affording to lose is somethign Arsenal can do...to be honest my team have equalled the record, so i guess if they were to lose on sunday it would not be the end of the world..affording to lose is for Man Utd..they lose this one and they sit 15 points behind Arsenal with 24 points to play for, but more alarmingly potentially 6 points behind Chelsea.......

United have nothing to lose. It's obvious where the title is going, fourth place gets a Champions League spot next season, so what's the panic? Second, third or fourth.. makes no difference to me.

Come on we have been here before
With six matches to go it was seven points last season and look what happened. You win on sunday and it opens it up for Chelsea...for me the key game of all of them is the penultimate one at OT when your mob entertain Chelsea.
Are you going to Highbury or Villa Park SG? If not would you like me to grab you a match programme for both, or do you get them other ways?

Wow, what a game to watch! This was thrilling from start to end, and I will agree that Arsenal deserved to win. Jens Lehman made some fantastic saves to keep United out, as did Carroll for United. Absolutely fantastic. Give me more games like this.. but don't give my heart that many!

It was a cracker. We were all a bit flat in the ground after failing to win, but I'd have taken the result before the game.

SG
there is a subtle difference between finishing 2nd, 3rd & 4th.
The top two qualify for the Champions League direct, with 3rd & 4th having a potential banana skin in pre-qualifying .....

Was at the game and was in North Bank watching Henry slam home that fantastic goal, however, i felt Wenger got his subs all wrong and effectively allowed United to come on to us in the last 10 minutes, resulting in a well worked but soft equaliser.
I felt we did enough to win but with United its never over till its over. And i still can not believe Lauren in the closing moments that (a) he did not shoot, or (b) he did not square to Henry...reports say that they both had a bit of a punch up in the tunnell becasue Theirry was so angry with Lauren's wastefulness.
All in all had i been offered 1-1 before id of taken it..Arsenal now have the greatest start to a season and for that i applaud them..but the biggest smiles yesterday were in Chelsea...7 points is still a nice gap....but im not counting my chickens yet...i remember last season all too well...
Fair result yesterday...now for round two next week..with Wenger resting his star players...

I can see at least one defeat in the remaining fixtures G. If it's not against Leeds at Highbury ( ), it'll be against Spurs at White Hart Lane. Please, please, please etc. wez

The record was broken; Arsenal went through the season undefeated. Another record may fall tonight, if Arsenal don't lose at Highbury v Blackburn Rovers -- most matches undefeated in the top tier. They equalled Forest's record of 42 games undefeated when they beat Middlesbough 5-3 on the weekend. The previous record was held by Leeds United, at 34 games undefeated. Code:
Nottingham Forest Lost 0-1 at Leeds United on 19-Nov-77. Their next loss was 0-2 at Anfield on 9-Dec-78. P. W. D. L. F-A 42 21 21 0 58-22 Arsenal Their last loss was 2-3 at home to Leeds United on 4-May-03. P. W. D. L. F-A 42 30 12 0 92-31 Leeds United Lost 1-5 at Burnley on 19-Oct-68. Their next loss was 2-3 at Goodison Park on 30-Aug-69. P. W. D. L. F-A 34 19 15 0 51-16
Who'll knock Arsenal off their perch?

Here's few stats before this weekend's Manchester United vs Arsenal match at Old Trafford: 2003-04 United 0-0 Arsenal 2002-03 United 2-0 Arsenal 2001-02 United 0-1 Arsenal 2000-01 United 6-1 Arsenal 1999-00 United 1-1 Arsenal 1998-99 United 1-1 Arsenal 1997-98 United 0-1 Arsenal 1996-97 United 1-0 Arsenal 1995-96 United 1-0 Arsenal 1994-95 United 3-0 Arsenal 1993-94 United 1-0 Arsenal 1992-93 United 0-0 Arsenal - Manchester United have won 6, Arsenal 2, and there have been 4 draws.
- Arsenal have never scored more than one goal at Old Trafford since the Premiership began.
- If Manchester United win, they will notch up exactly 1,000 points in the Premiership.
- If Arsenal win, it's 50 not out.

Not a hope in hell my Mancunian wonder boys!
The wenger boys are coming to town, and one expects 2-0 to the Gunners
BTW SG
You forget to add the FA Cup tie a couple of season back when indeed the Gunners won 2-0..so it can be done....
and Treble99
2001-02 United 0-1 Arsenal
Ahh happy evening to land the title in your back yard!!! The odds of us repeating that are well impossible, but hte result, certainly more possible than the *coughs* jammy 6-1 you had the season before.
