Expand your job search beyond government agencies and Internet job sites. Consider aggressively going after the private sector. And, if you're an editor on this site, is teaching a possibility?

Consider "transitioning" you skills into other areas: research centers (think tanks), foundations, non-profit, foreign companies doing biz in/with the US etc. You've got a marketable degree, you just have to find the hot market.

Finally, (and I'll get off the stump), don't settle. Find the right job for you even if it means working at the 7-11 for a few months. Taking any job that comes along isn't going to make you glad to go to work every day - and isn't that what we all want? Wait for the position that'll make you happy.
Best wishes,
nutmeglad

Updating this... I came back from Christmas vacation to my boss announcing his resignation. I got his job and have been the Director of Research for a couple weeks now.

Well, I got a call today from the FBI offering me a job. So my last day here is March 18.

Now I need to find not only a research assistant, but a director of research.

And geesh, my new business cards just came in...

Well, during the interview they said something like "You wouldn't feel like this work was beneath you because you have your MA?" So what am I supposed to do? Leave off the MA on my resume?

I was always told any degree you get at the collegiate level needs to be on a resume. When I can get some time and money, I would like to go get an MBA, and, most likely, it will be at a college near me. I graduated with a BS in computer information systems in October 1999, and since that sector is slow, I have not been able to get any kind of work with it. It also does not help when it is 2 months before Y2K had hit. The company I am with now has some computer jobs, and I am trying to get my foot in the door. I've been with them since May 2001, so after that length of time, I would hate to throw all that seniority away. I have also had a person pull a weapon on me, and still I have not left. I can tell you from experience that is never a good situation. I feel I am dedicated to stay with this company, so all I need to do is get my foot in the right door now.

Have you tried working with an employment agency? My dad is a project manager/computer programmer and he went to an employment agency that specialised in people in the IT sector and they found him a great job.

And you had a gun pulled on you?! Details, please!

I work at a restaurant currently, but they have computer positions at the main office in Dallas. If you click the link above, the first place mentioned is where I was. All I can say is that if I can have that happen, and stay with them, my senior management should realize I am dedicated. It still gets to me sometimes...but I try to get on with my life.

Edited to add: You can work anywhere and have that type of situation. No one, unfortunately, is immune from that.

So what's your new job with the FBI, Beth? Working with the FBI sounds so interesting.
