I am about to uninstall my MX700 Logitech optical mouse and reinstall my former one which is a Logitech Cordless Wheelmouse, prior to giving the old computer to a relative. I then plan to install the MX700 on my new computer when it arrives.

Trouble is, I only seem to have one software CD. This is labelled for Windows Mouseware 8.40. If anyone has either of these models, should there be CDs for both and which one is the 8.40 software for? I would hate to uninstall and then find I couldn't reinstall. It could be that the old wheelmouse was just plug-in and detect and didn't have a CD, but I just can't remember...

The MX700 mouse will probably just work when you plug it into the new computer. Windows will give it a driver. If the Windows driver works OK it probably wouldn't hurt just to leave it at that. However, if you want to download the latest Logitech driver for the mouse it can be downloaded from here (just select your mouse). This will save you wondering if the Mouseware 8.40 disk is the right one to use.

Just as an aside: I have a Kensington optical mouse. It worked as soon as it was plugged in but I installed the Kensington driver anyway. The mouse behaved erratically with the software and I ultimately uninstalled it and went back to using the Windows XP supplied driver. The mouse then worked perfectly again.

Conclusion: Windows mouse drivers are good.

Well after another hunt, I found instruction leaflets for both mice, both of which ask me to use a CD-Rom, so I definitely have a CD missing which is almost impossible. I did wonder if the CDs were identical so I scrapped one, but not very likely. I notice that the CD I have got has a 1999 reference on the label, so I think it must be the earlier one. In any case, I shall follow your advice TW and donate the CD-Rom to the relative and just plug in the MX700 to the new computer.

I am not going to make any changes on my present computer until I have the new one and have checked it over outwardly at least!
