Coolupway made some marvellous suggestions for new discussion topics in another thread, so I thought I'd get the ball rolling with one of them ...

"What you use the "crisper" in your refrigerator for?"

Chocolate, what else!

If I currently understand what you're talking about, it's the vegetables for me!

(Am I geeting 'crisper' confused with 'chiller'? I'm under the impression that a crisper is the one at the bottom and the chiller at the top, below the freezer. Is this correct? )

Mine currently contains several rolls of undeveloped film. I doubt they are any good now as I've had them in the crisper for well over 2 years. One of these days, I'll remember to take them in for developing.

Um.. I'm not sure. I think I shoved a ton of my roommate's junk in there so I could have room for my milk in the fridge.

Harish, my understanding is that a crisper is below the refrigerated portion of the box and keeps vegetables 'crisp.' It usually has a slide-out drawer. The freezer has a separate door either above, below or to one side of the refrigerated compartment.
My refrigerator has a left-hand, full-length door for the freezer (with an ice dispenser). The right-hand door is the compartment for chilled products and the bottom 2 drawers are for vegetables, cheeses, luncheon meats, and such.

My fridge, like many in the UK, fits under the work top so is about waist-high - we don't have whacking great things with double doors, some do but not many.

I keep seeing adds for an 'internet fridge' - the mind boggles. Anyone got one?

A quick check of the crisper revealed a bag of mushrooms that are now in the bin, a carrot shrivelled to about half it's size (in the bin also) and two apples. Guess even the crisper can't keep things going for ever. Don't really use the fridge much cause we have a walk in coolroom for everything and in that I have special little bags that keep veges crisp but it doesn't have an ice maker which sounds like luxury.

Can I ask, Cryan, why you'd keep candels in the fridge? (chocolate i can understand!)

They might wish to change the name to 'limper'.

I have never heard of this referred to as the "crisper". I have always called it, "that drawer you stick the vegetables in". Sometimes I put stuff in there that I can't fit anywhere else!

I call it the salad drawer, it is where I place salad then forget to eat it so it goes manky. Don't cucumbers become foul when you let them go off, all slimey.

Well, at least we're not going through our underwear drawers...yet!
The upper drawer, labeled the "Moist 'n Fresh" drawer by the manufacturer, contains a bag of salad greens, a few tomatoes, a bag of carrots and a bunch of radishes.
The lower drawer, the "Convertible Meat Pan" (whatever that means) contains one serving of string cheese. I guess I should go shopping.

Anything I find that is brown, fuzzy (except for kiwi fruit) or green that shouldn't be green gets pitched.

The icemaker would be a luxury, but our well water isn't fit to drink so we buy our ice cubes and put them in the icemaker tray. The alternative to an automatic icemaker is the sectioned trays to which you add water and try not to spill any while putting the tray in the freezer.
Americans are big on ice, we must have it, don't deny us ice or we attack!

I don't know why it's called a Crisper when it has totally the oposite effect on food stored in it.

Okay, this ice maker in the fridge has got me intrigued. Is it connected up to it's own water supply or does it have to be refilled manually? I wanna icemaker, I wanna icemaker.

And Fjohn, what do you do for drinking water? You don't have rainwater tanks about?

I have wonderfully fresh salad in mine (which I call the vegetable draw...) and I'm very proud because I'm managing to throw less and less away....instead I buy more frozen stuff

I just buy those ice cube bags from Sainsburys that you just fill up with water and stick in the freezer...it's dead quick.

What do you guys do with all this ice?! I never need it...

My crisper (is this really a word? Doesn't show up in my dictionary.) currently just contains one can of beer, left behind by a friend who brought his own beer and forget to take the left overs with him. Since I don't drink beer it's still there.

Now that is bad planning. I'd have been knocking at the door asking for my beer back!

Apparently, because we know where the candles are in a emergency, and they keep them cold and make them last longer when you use them!!

Well, there you go - I did not know that. And now that you mention it, I wouldn't know where any candles were in an emergency - there's merit in that one!

I think I can honestly say I only ever use ice in the summer. I sometimes put them in drinks but mostly I just pop one in my mouth. Isn't it also useful for getting gum out of clothes?? I remember my mum doing that once

"Mine currently contains several rolls of undeveloped film. I doubt they are any good now as I've had them in the crisper for well over 2 years."

I'll bet they're still good! I used to go out with a professional photographer (before I met Maynooth) and he always kept his film in the fridge. We never had any of it go bad.
