Skunk Cabbage named new Portland, Oregon Symbol

In a desire to keep with the times and educate the public about our environment, the "City of Roses," (Or was it, "The City That Works?") has unveiled a new city symbol. From today on, Portland, Oregon will be known as the "City of Skunk Cabbage." This beautiful yellow wildflower that blooms in swampy wooded areas, is a symbol of endurance and beauty. Surviving even the severest of winters, the skunk cabbage blooms each spring and carries with it a reminder that "not all flowers smell so sweet." Hereafter, Portland will celebrate "Skunk Cabbage Festival," by inviting garbage scows from all over the world to tie up along our waterfront. The "Skunk Cabbage Parade," will kick off a month of "Skunk Cabbage" festivities. Rumor has it that Tonya Harding has been asked to preside over the first "Skunk Cabbage Parade" as Grand Marshall. A dark side to this change has been the lack of "Skunk Cabbage Ambassadors" competing at local high schools. Somehow the young fashion-conscious teens are shunning the new requirement that they compete in bright yellow and green clothing to simulate a budding Skunk Cabbage flower. Currently, a plan is being drawn up to gut the Washington Park Rose Garden, fill it with water, and seed it with Skunk Cabbage for a highly anticipated display next year. Long live the "Skunk Cabbage City, Portland, Oregon!"
