'We Built This City' Tops Magazine's List Of Worst Songs

NEW YORK -- They may be catchy, and they may have been big hits -- but they're also just plain bad.

Blender's editors came up the top 50 "Worst Songs Of All Time." The magazine ranks supposedly rank cuts by Celine Dion, Meat Loaf, Uncle Kracker, The Beatles, Starship -- even Simon and Garfunkel -- using criteria like bad melodies, wretched performances, not making sense, and pomposity.

Topping the list -- the 1985 hit "We Built This City," by Starship. They call "We Built This City" "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar."

And in second place, Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart" is slammed for representing -- quoting the magazine here -- "every prejudice non-believers have about country: It was trite, it was inane, it was big in trailer parks and it was thoroughly enjoyed by the obese."

That was followed by Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight."

"Rollin"' by Limp Bizkit ranks fourth, followed by "Ice Ice Baby."

Rounding out the top 10 worst songs ever are Huey Lewis and the News with "The Heart of Rock-and-Roll," "Don't Worry, Be Happy," Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time," "American Life" and "Ebony and Ivory."

At 22 is Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (THE ANGRY AMERICAN.)"

Blender calls it "a fight anthem so vengeful, it makes 'The Star-Spangled Banner' sound like 'Give Peace a Chance.'"

The issue is on newstands Tuesday in New York and Los Angeles, and a week from Tuesday everyplace else.

Of the following, which would you say is the worst song and why?

"We Built This City"
"Achy Breaky Heart"
"Everybody Have Fun Tonight"
"Rollin"
"Ice Ice Baby"
"The Heart of Rock-and-Roll"
"Don't Worry, Be Happy"
"Party All the Time"
"American Life"
"Ebony and Ivory"

Willie and Julio didn't make the list? 'To All The Girls I've Loved Before' is the ultimate in conceit, and I am a MALE!

How about the 'Pina Colada' song?

"Achy Breaky Heart" - absolutely no argument there- would 'Green Door' meet requirements?

That would have to be Ice Ice Baby. I absolutely HATE rap!

I think it's a shame that Ebony and Ivory is on that list though, it's a nice song.

From that list, "Achy Breaky Heart", hands down. If only played once on the radio, it would just have been a stupid song. But given that it was aired hundreds of millions of times (or did it just seem that many?), it quickly became a vile, distgusting, obnoxious, vomit-inducing "song".

I once heard Britney Spears butcher "I Love Rock N Roll" and thought I was going to crawl out of my skin. That horrid cover version should be on the worst song list.

Anything by Rod Stewart. Sorry if I've offended anybody, but I can't stand either his music or his voice!

If over-sweet and banal songs can be counted among the worst, then two of my candidates are "Torn Between Two Lovers" by Maureen McCormack and "I've Never Been To Me"; I don't remember who sang the latter, which is probably a blessing!

I think Keith West's 'Excerpt From A Teenage Opera' should be in there somewhere!

The people that live in the town
Don't understand
He's never been known to miss his round,
"It's ten-o'clock", the housewives yell.
"When Jack turns up we'll 'give him hell."
Husbands moan at breakfast tables
No milk. no egg. no marmalade labels
Mothers send their children out
To Jack's house to scream and shout

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack. get off your back
Come into town. don't let us down. Oh no. no.
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack. get off your back
Come into town. don't let us down. Oh no. no.

See what I mean?

I can appreciate why the original article cites "We Built this City" as #1. Nothing is more absurd than a pretentious rock group; Lord knows, we've had more than a few, and Gracie Slick has fronted at least two. It's too easy work to lampoon the wretched excesses of many disco or C&W songs but when the media proclaims the latest surly rock icon as a social commentator, it takes a bit of grit to point out that the emperor has no clothes. In that light, I'd like to nominate the grand-daddy of the rock protest genre "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire. That ditty had it all: Infantile rhyme scheme, suicidal angst, absolute predictability and horrid vocalizing. Maguire, you're to blame for neanderthal Luddites like Rage Against the Machine <g>
As a slight departure, I'll also nominate the James Taylor version of Jimmy Jones' "Handy Man" when Taylor was going through his phase of turning joyful, uptempo "oldies" by energized black groups into the worst kind of white bread blather.

Of the above songs I would have to say "Everybody Have Fun Tonight."

However, I would have to say that the most horrible song ever written is "God Fearing Women Get The Blues" by Martina McBride. It's a gross song that should NEVER have been written and recorded!

Ebony And Ivory. I'm not a fan of Paul McCartney's music, but I am of Stevie Wonder's. Or at least his earlier stuff. While the sentiment is difficult to argue with, this really is as bland as it gets. Black and white combining together to produce a dull grey!

I'm going with Ice Ice Baby, here, and partly because I hated that song when it first came out, but my sister bought the album, and then played it so many times I STILL remember ALL the words, and I was never even trying to learn them. *sigh* I quickly got tired of Don't Worry Be Happy, but still dislike it sitting in the top 10, only because I think Bobby McFarrin is a superb artist. I can't stand Achy Breaky Heart, but was never forced to listen to it, so I didn't grow the same hatred for it as I have for Ice Ice Baby...

Of the list provided, I’d say it’s a tie between Achy Breaky Heart (replace the He with an F) and Ice Ice Baby. Why? Just listen to them!

My list would include:
Lay Your Love On Me – Racey
January – Pilot
My Little Baby – William Shakespeare

sung by Charlene this song holds the UK record for longest consecutive period from charting to reach number one - something like 14 weeks after it debuted at number 74.

it was indeed truly awful.

from the list "Achy Braky Heart" is the most vomit inducing and "Ebony And Ivory" the most cringeworthy.

I'm slightly disappointed that Renee & Renato's "Save Your Love" didn't make the list. This needs to be added to the annals (i could've left one of those "n's" out) of musical history for deposing the Jam's "Beat Surrender" from No.1.

Yes Oleg, it just goes to show that despite the brilliant music that comes out of the UK from time to time, the UK public just don't get it!

Of the given list, Achy Breaky Heart has to be the absolute worst and I still hear it played on the radio - usually when my husband has changed my radio station! My absolute worst has to be Daytrip to Bangor tied with Fernando (Abba) - sorry to offend any Abba fans!

First, i would like to say that i like "party all the time." it doesn't have many different lyrics in it but "party all the time" but it has a nice tune. I think Ice Ice baby is the worst song. It makes me laugh though

Gee, between Vanilla Ice and the Billy Ray Virus--too close to call.

My least favorite pop song is probably "Do You Feel Like I Do?" by Peter Frampton.

I despise the majority of bubblegum pop songs and R&B songs. And I cringe every time i hear pearl jams last kiss and that all my life R&Bsong... My stepsister used to play these particular songs at TOP volume on repeat...not good....

I drove my husband to distraction recently playing Hoobastank's first single over and over and over and over and over and over until I think even I was nearly sick of it . . .
