This president grew up speaking a language other than English.

This president almost made Cuba one of the United States of America.

Who were they?

A couple of very good questions, Ricardo. I think that the American President that almost made Cuba one of the United States was Thomas Jefferson. He wanted to buy it from Spain during his Presidency, but they refused. On the other I will guess F.D.R.. Given his patrician upbringing, the may have spoken French around the house just for yucks.

Sorry, tim10001....neither answer is correct.

Some more clues:

1. The guy with English as a second language was also the first president to be born an American citizen (all prior presidents were born British subjects); his family emigrated to the US as indentured servants from Europe.

2. This guy offered Spain $100 dollors for Cuba on two separate occasions (the last of the big-time spenders he wasn't!); Spain refused the offer.

WOW! Pling....you not only got the answers correct...you get extra credit for the Pierce and Buchanan answers! Good job!

BUT...do you know:

Which president served the shortest term in office?

Which president, due to a clerical error made during his college registration, was assigned the wrong name? He liked the 'wrong' name so much, he kept it his entire life, and this is how we know him?

Which president served the shortest term in office?

Some sources will mention a guy name Anderson, who "served" as President for one day because the real President did not want to take the oath of office on a Sunday. But Anderson was not sworn in as President, so he really doesn't count. The real President with the shortest term was William Henry Harrison (one month).

Which president, due to a clerical error made during his college registration, was assigned the wrong name? He liked the 'wrong' name so much, he kept it his entire life, and this is how we know him?

When Hiram Ulysses Grant went to West Point, he was called Ulysses Simpson Grant (I forget why), and liked the new initials better, and kept them.

Who was the most educated of the presidents? This guy earned 12 different college degrees and authored several college texts before teaching at Johns Hopkins, Bryn Mawr, Wesleyan and Princeton?

Here's some of my favorite Presidential trivia questions for you, vendome:

1. Which President was born in Delaware AND in Ohio?

2. Which President could write in Greek with one hand, and in Latin with the other hand; at the same time?

3. Which President often ate a cucumber soaked in vinegar for breakfast?

You're right, reedman.

You guys are unreal. But I'm determined......try this one:

Which president had the dubious distinction of being the only chief executive to have hung a man?

Grover Cleveland

In response to Leprechaun's question, "Silent Cal" Coolidge.

My question: Who was the first president to throw out the first ball on major league baseball's opening day?

You're right..the 'hanging pres' was Grover Cleveland.

Which president was a disaster where appointments to his Cabinet were concerned. His ineptitude in Cabinet appointees was blamed on his 'youthful inexperience." His Secretary of State resigned shortly after appointment; the Secretary of War died during his first year; the millionaire Secretary of the Treasury was forced from office due to 'conflict of interest', and the Secretary of the Navy (another millionaire) resigned after 3 months because "this government job takes up too much time." Name him.

You've got me on the "hung something other than a man" question. I've been the 'artwork' route (which is the only other thing that I can think of that one hangs) but this is usually the domain of First Ladies. Wanna give another clue, or shall I admit defeat? Oh, the shame, the shame!

I believe that in New York City they once hung an elephant that had gone on a rampage and killed several people. Since Teddy Roosevelt was the Police Commissioner in New York City for a while, could he be the one you are looking for?
