I watched the movie last Friday (and even in English!), and I was just curious to know what you guys thought of it.
I have no idea whether it's usual in the US to talk about the Greeks in school, i.e. if you were familiar with the story or not. I had to learn all that stuff in sixth or seventh grade, and though I've forgotten most of it, I was surprised how easy I could remember everything as the movie went along.
Just in case you're interested in my opinion - I enjoyed the movie, most of all the actors. I thought they were all very well chosen; almost all of them looked and acted the way I had always imagined them. I never liked Achilles, for instance, so I thought that Brad Pitt played him just the way he was supposed to. In fact, he even made me want to slap his face, just because I didn't like him at all (and I used to be quite a fan of Brad; if he makes me hate him, that means that his acting was really excellent!).
I missed Cassandra, but still the movie worked very well without her. I was impressed by Eric Bana (Hector), and also Orlando Bloom was a very good Paris. Seems as if he's becoming a better actor with every movie he makes. I'm starting to forgive him for this hype he caused with LOTR
Seeing how Wolfgang Petersen slipped in a few references for those who read Homer made me smile. Have you noticed that, if you don't know the story, you keep wondering the whole movie who the heck Sean Bean's character (Odysseus, or rather: Ulysses) is? The first time he is addressed by his name is near the end And then this side reference to Aeneas (do you spell the name like this?) getting out of the city.
All in all, I liked "Troy" better than "Gladiator". Although it was a little bit too gory for my taste, I couldn't help feeling that it may really have been that way. Taking this into consideration, I thought it was a good idea to leave out the Gods.
One last thing: I loved the song that was played during the credits. But I forgot the name of the guy who sang it. Can anyone help me out there? I know the song was called "Remember", and I SEEM to remember that the singer's name was Josh something... I'd appreciate your help here

What did you think of the movie? Did you like it? Dislike it? Anything else you'd like to share?

The singer was Josh Groban. He's very good!

I liked the movie as well. It was a lot of fun. I didn't realize that it was that long until the movie ended and I saw that we had been there for almost 3 hours! But I really enjoyed it. Later my friend and I went bowling, and we chose Achilles and Hector as our names! Aren't we silly?

All in all, it was a very good movie. The gory stuff didn't bother me at all, and it was way better than Gladiator.

I haven't seen Troy but Gladiator is a pretty good film. Maybe I'll have to watch Troy now since most of you are saying it's better!

I've been on and off Troy though. When I first saw the trailers I really wanted to watch it, then I thought I'll just wait for the DVD to come out.

Then I got put off the entire film because my friend watched it at the cinemas and didn't like it and she's a really big Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom fan. She also said that Orlando's acting was really bad which I was surprised to hear knowing how much a fan she is of him.

I guess I'll just watch it for the heck of it, and decide for myself whether it's good or not. But I'm not sure if I'll like it more than Gladiator. Hmmm....just have to wait and see.

Troy is one of the worst movies ever made, and I've seen a lot of movies. I am glad someone posted a forum about it so I can finally vent. Breathe, that’s the key. First off, Orlando Bloom. He was good in the LOTR, but that's only because he only said a few lines for every movie. When he finally started to 'act', I realized what I bad actor he was.

The movie is god-awful. It doesn't feel real, it feels forced. It reminds me of The Ten Commandments, really corny. The action was terrible. The acting was terrible. The music was terrible. They did a horrible job of adapting the story. I thought there was one redeeming quality to the movie, Eric Bana. I actually thought he did a good job. But one man cannot carry a movie, especially if he is not even the main character.

I didn't like Gladiator so much, but even that is far superior to this. It had a good action, good acting, felt real, and you cared about the characters. When I watched Troy, I was sad when Paris didn't die, and Happy when Achilles did. A dreadful movie from start to finish.

I've heard bad things said about it, but until now I've never heard it as one of the worst movies ever made. (I have a feeling "Alexander the Great," in terms of movies about Greeks, probably caught up!)

Anyway, I saw this movie. It was entertaining in some ways but not a film, if you know what I mean. I liked the sets and costumes, but agree the acting for the most part needed a lot of work. Never thought Orlando Bloom was that great of an actor, not even in LotR.

But Brad Pitt...he was bad too. All he had to do was prance around with little clothes on; he brought no depth to Achilles. As the story of Troy is really about the tragedies of Hector and Achilles, Pitt's non-acting left a gaping hole IMHO.

Sadly, neither Peter O'Toole and Julie Christie brought much to the movie.

Agree on Eric Bana - I saw him in "Hulk" and thought he did a fantastic job. Rose Byrne, who played Briseis, was quite good also.

The character of Menelaus felt like a total caricature to me - a large, fat, old man who was abusive to his wife, no wonder Helen wanted to leave him, right? If I remember the mythology correctly, Helen fell in love with Paris because Aphrodite cast a spell on her. It wasn't because Menelaus was a dirty brute. But I guess since they left out most of the mythological elements, they had to make up an excuse.

Conclusion: Watch "Gladiator," skip "Troy."

This movie was terrible. The reason to make a movie about Troy should be to tell the amazing story in a more entertaining format. "Troy" the movie failed at this. The only real connections between the story and the movie are the character names and the location of the war. The plot is wrong, the character relations are wrong, the fighting styles and tools are wrong. Major characters were left out (Diomedes, Cassandra). Others are barely metioned at all (Odysseus, Nestor, Aeneas). The acting is decent, but that doesn't in any way cover up an awful script. All of the characters, with the exception of Hector, were portrayed very badly. I was glad when Agamemnon and Achilles were killed, and was furious when Paris didn't. The entire war lasted less than twenty days, and that is with the 12 days of Hector's funeral games included. None of the emotions and feeling inspired by the story of Troy are present in this film.

I love greek mythology and i own copies of the illiad and odessey and i liked the movie even though it was not acurate at all.

I dont think that the point of the novie was to portray the legend of Troy and the war but merely to tell a 'hollywood' version of these accounts. Thats the reason for the well known stars i think. Brad Pitt was good i thought but Orlando Bloom sucked big time.

I love the character of achillies in the books and i think that brad pit did him justice, my only fault with his storyline was they didnt show anything about his mother and the river styx and his immortality. I mean they showed the heel thing but didnt explain it.

Anyway my point is that i am a big fan of the story and i still greatly enjoyed this movie.

I loved this movie. I was expecting more gore though actually. But overall it was a good movie. Not in my top 10 lists but still good. Gladiator was good but too slow, this movie was good throughout the whole movie imo.
