Who was the original singer of the song "The First Cut Is The Deepest" and who was it written by? Also how many others performed it and who were they?

Well, I know it was written by Cat Stevens, not sure if he would have also been the the first to sing it but probably was. Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow are two singers that have covered it. Actually just found a website that shows more- Cat Stevens

It was also covered by PP Arnold (who had a hit with it in 1967), Gene Pitney, Love Affair, Tony Hadley, Koobas, Martin Simpson, Sweet, David West and even Twiggy. I think there are quite a few more....

Cat Stevens was the first to the song on an Album called 'New Masters' (1967). P.P. Arnold was the first to take it into the Top Twenty in that same year.

I saw Rob Stewart sing it the other day on VH1 Classics.

Definately a case of Ms. Crow's cover being better than the previous.
