  • A 'camel without humps' -- which could been the llama, guanaco, or alpaca
  • A black 'goose' which had to be skinned instead of plucked -- the penguin
  • A 'seawolf', with the head of a calf -- the seal
  • Two of our closest galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds, visible from the Southern Hemisphere
  • The extent of the Earth -- their voyage was '14,460 leagues' (or 69 000 Km)
  • The need for an International date line -- That going round the earth westward was winning one day: upon their return they observed a mismatch of one day between their calendars and those who did not travel, even though they faithfully maintained their ship's log.

I watched on the History Channel that he discovered why not to get involved with tribal disputes in the Phillipines.

Unfortunately, he did not get a chance to report why first hand to King Phillip.

Battle, I'm assuming he didn't get a chance to report because he knew exactly why not to get involved?

Not sure.

He never left the Phillipines or finished circumnavigating the world.

I've heard two different variants of the story from two sources.

The funnier one I got from a college prof.

Magellan's priest gathereed the heathens around. He showed them a cruxifix. The natives took this to mean the Spaniards will "bring painful death" so got rather upset.

The History channel story is much more involved.
