I have bought some CD-R disks and tried to make backups of my photo files. I keep getting a message saying the disk is write protected and to remove the write protection or choose another disk. How do I do this? (remove the protection, not choose another disk, I could manage that!)

Did you already use the disk?

What software are you using?

Edit: Are you using InCD, or something like it? This where you use the CD like another drive and can drag files to and from it, just like a big floppy disk. If so, you'll need to use a CD-RW disk (a re-writable CD).

These are brand new unused CD-R Maxell disks. I am using it with Pinnacle software for disk writing. On seeing your replies, I tried copying without using the software and it copied OK. I can only conclude I should bypass the Pinnacle program if I want straight backup copying. It works fine on burning audio CDs.

That would be using XP's own copying capability then would it?

It might be worth carefully combing through all the options in the Pinnacle software leaving no stone unturned. Is there anything about write-protect in their own help files or FAQ?

Yes, that was by right clicking on the folder and choosing Send To CD drive, so this backup is fine. I shall do as you suggest and get down to reading the Pinnacle manuals (never my favourite pastime and one I am always reprimanded about eventually). Many thanks.
