I just saw the "Stepford Wives" remake by Frank Oz, starring Nicole Kidman. Or rather, I should say, the spoof, parody, take-off...I mean it WAS a take on the 70's original, wasn't it? I saw the original by Bryan Forbes and starring Katharine Ross when a teen, and no matter its flaws, it was by far the better film. It was a true horror film, while the remake is a post-Spielberg cartoon, complete with an out-of-left-field conclusion that makes a mockery of the original's message. The only good scenes were the reality TV spoofs in the beginning...and they belonged to another picture altogether! Broderick was a pouty wimp whose change at the end was unrealistic and poor Bette Midler was wasted! And poor Ira Levin! So far, the best movies of his work remain the original "A Kiss Before Dying", "Rosemary's Baby" and "Deathtrap". What's next, is Spielberg gonna remake "Rosemary?"

Why MUST they insist on making remakes of films that were just fine to begin with? And why MUST former Oscar winners and nominees or Tony Award winners get involved? I saw Broderick on "The Today Show" trying to push this film, but it was obvious he wasn't very proud of it. There was really nothing "funny" about the story, the original one. What's next? Maybe a humorous version of "A Streetcar Named Desire"? So I agree with you, wholeheartedly, tjoebigham. .
But I haven't seen the movie and don't soon plan to.

What I don't understand is why they can't seem to come up with an original movie anymore... They all seem to be either based on books or remakes of old movies.

I never saw the '70s "Stepford Wives" -- actually, until just now, I had no idea that it had been made into a movie before! But I saw the preview for the new one and it looks really good!

I'm not sure if you could call one an "original" though and another a "remake" since they're both based on "The Stepford Wives" book by Ira Levin. They're both just film adaptations.

My sister saw "Stepford.." the other night and told me not to waste my money. I saw the first one when it came out in the '70s and thought it was a great horror flick. I also saw the made for TV version of "Stepford, Part Two". Now that was a horrible movie.

In Part II, the women were changed and controlled by the use of pills, which they were brainwashed into taking every day at noon when the town siren blew. When the newcomer herione (don't remember who played in the movie) figured out what was happening, she somehow rigged the town siren and all the town ladies returned to normal, but not after chasing down their husbands. I remember thinking "what a way to ruin a good movie". (The first one, that is).
