Every time in the past I have started to defrag I have gotten the message "Your computer is not seriously fragmented--defrag not necessary." This time I'm first going to first do some serious pruning of obsolete bookmarks, documents and files. I know to do it in Safe Mode. Any other tips?

Tellywellies, I'm using Windows 95. I've just gotten the advice: don't bother--it buys you very little increased operating speed and gives your hard drive a real workout.

I remember that message from Windows 95. It was dropped from Windows 98 but has reappeared in Windows XP.

When I had Windows 95 I found that even though the message appeared, the disk still seemed fairly fragmented once the defrag process was started. It's true that deframenting might put the disk through its paces because data around gets moved around quite a bit. If the disk is OK there should be no adverse effects though.

Just a suggestion. Have you considered an upgrade to Windows 98 SE or XP? Windows 95 is pretty old now. A Windows 98SE installation disk should be available quite inexpensively.

What is the processor speed and what amount of memory does the computer have?

Tellywellies, I'm embarrassed to report 233 MHz Pentium II and 128 MB RAM (I know, I know, it's a dinosaur). It is so hopelessly obsolete it's probably not worth fixing up. I don't give it a very hard workout, and it meets my needs, so I'll keep using this until some major trouble is brewing and then just get a new system.

Well I'd say do it, and do it often. I have XP true, but I've been through all of the versions, and I still think it's a good thing to defrag it, it does help the overall funcion of your computer. Besides if you do it often enough it won't be such a hard workout ... plus if I remember right that silly msg doesn't mean a thing!
