As far as I know that is not exactly an easy thing to do. I do believe there is a program called Logon Loader that might help with this ... should be freeware ... maybe someone knows more about this.

I found an article about the program pegazus suggested. It includes a link to the site where you can download Logon Loader. I have never tried to change the welcome screen myself, so I can't really give any advice... If you decide to use the program, let us know if it works!

I don't know about XP, but for older versions all you had to do was find the image on your computer and then replace it with another one that you liked (using the SAME file name).

We are not talking about that horrible screen with the rolling hills and blue skies that XP uses? I have just got rid of mine and put up a picture that I prefer as I was fed up with looking at it.

Lol, Sue, you mean the Teletubbies landscape? We're talking about something else...I think.

Is that what it is supposed to be.

I don't know, but I thought the similarities were striking.

No I meant that blue screen which has the word Welcome on it. Totally unnecessary after the first time I would have thought. However, getting rid of it to gain a second or two hardly seems worth the rather complicated procedure to get rid of it, so I shall just put it into that other annoying category of "have a nice day" and be glad it doesn't say that as well.... many thanks for the help and suggestions.

Ah, I am with you now, it annoys the heck out of me too. My daughter has XP and you don't have that on her computer, there is just an icon for each person on the desktop.

It has just occurred to me, I will be having XP on my new office computer when it arrives shortly, I will try to get the engineer to remove the wretched screen if it is not too time consuming, I really don't want it.

Ah ha! Unless I am misunderstanding it is just a question of unticking a check box!

Quote:

To turn the Welcome screen on or off
You must have a computer administrator account to turn the Use the Welcome screen feature on or off.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click Change the way users log on or off.
Do one of the following:
To specify that users log on to the computer using the Welcome screen, select the Use the Welcome screen check box.
A user logs on to the computer by clicking his or her user account name on the Welcome screen. If a password is assigned to the account, the user is prompted to type it.

To specify that users log on to the computer without using the Welcome screen, clear the Use the Welcome screen check box.
The Welcome screen will no longer appear when you start the computer. To log on to the computer, type your user name (and password, if you have one) in the standard Log On to Windows dialog box.

I have just done it myself so hopefully it will work.

Edited to add that I went to Help and typed 'Welcome screen' in the search box.

Steady on Sue. If everyone starts using the Help Files we won't have so much to talk about in here.

Mine has gone too, hurray.

What was nasty was when I got home from work today I got a message from MS saying that it had fixed a serious problem and could it send MS a message as it would help them with Windows in the future - I wonder what the problem could have been.

That could ring alarm bells as I thought I read that Microsoft never send you messages - was it an email?

No, not an email, it was a window and I have had it again today. I am wondering if I need to remove my broadband and re-install it as I have had several reports of being out of virtual memory too. I have asked an engineer and he said it might be wise to uninstall and do it again.

If it's something that has only just started can you tie it down to any specific changes you have made? I can't see that turning the Welcome Screen would have anything to do with it but was there anything else?

Perhaps you could try using a Restore Point to take the computer back to a time before the trouble started.

Downloaded a newer version of MSN which wouldn't work today as it said there was a problem with a driver, I downloaded it last week and it was working then.

There could be a few reasons for low virtual memory messages and they can be found at the bottom of this page. Unfortunately, the suggested cures are only for the brave. The sort of steps that might lead to trouble perhaps.

Regarding MSN, you would have to reinstall the later version again if you did a system restore. Although if the earlier version was working OK perhaps you could just leave it at that. Sometimes, upgrading isn't always necessary and may not even be for the best.

Has the 'GDI+' mentioned in the other thread always been there?
