I recently put anti-virus protection on my computer (Windows 98) where I had had NONE before. I used to be able to access jigsaw puzzles from jigzone.com, and now the puzzles aren't coming up anymore. Information from "help" menu at the site suggested that I may have a java problem, but I can't figure it out.

I've set the security in the internet options to "medium" as well as to "low" ("high" had been checked before) with no luck. The only other options (which are NOT checked) are "custom" and "disable java".

From my "Advanced" tab, I see Java VM. Nothing in that section is checked. From what I've read, the windows virtual machine doesn't have a function anymore, so that would be consistent that nothing is checked.

Any ideas to share?

I don't think that putting antivirus software on your computer will have affected its ability to run java applets (a jigsaw in this case). Java VM (virtual machine) is being phased out by Microsoft but it is still supported by them until the end of 2007 for those who already have it installed. It should be installed on your computer because you are on W.98. Try this:

* Open IE
* Go into: Tools > Internet Options.
* Click the 'Security' tab.
* Click on the 'Internet' icon.
* Click on the 'Custom Level' button.
* Scroll down the list to the 'Scripting of Java applets' heading.
* Make sure that 'enable' is selected.
* Click OK and OK again to close the box.
* See if the jigsaw site works.

Did you install Java for Firefox? If so, you could also try using that:

* Go to the Control Panel.
* Find the Java Plug-in icon and double-click it.
* Select the 'Browser' tab.
* Check the box that says 'Microsoft Internet Explorer.
* Click the 'Apply' button.
* Close the box.
* See if the jigsaw site works.

Information about Microsoft VM

The scripting is enabled when I go to settings-->control panel-->internet settings, and I haven't installed the firefox at this time.

I thot maybe the anti-virus set up a firewall security that may have blocked my java applets.

I also tried going to the IE browser to see if it would show up properly there. It didn't.
Any other ideas?

I'm SOOO excited!! I did all my Windows updates (since back to 1999!!!), and the jigsaw puzzles are WORKING!! I'm SOOO excited!! Everything appears to be back to normal for the first time since Mar. when I first got "infected". Now if I can just KEEP it this way!!
Thanks to you all for your help.
