It is now Saturday in Australia---am I allowed to post my list now? Or should I wait? Just wondering...

You could but it might be better latter in the day when its Saturday in Europe and the USA. Which would probably be about 3pm. However if you aren't going to be around then post it now by all means.

Wow - a feast of Trivia Rounds. I've sent in my selections for Kuu's, Lothruin's and Gatsby's, so that's me up to date for now.

Prepare for a mini-famine. I'll be posting Sunday's sometime in the afternoon CET, though that will be the wee hours of Monday for the Aussies. Hmmm...

New idea, I'll post them in the wee hours of Sunday CET (I'm always online then anyway). Sounds like a plan!

Here are the results of Round 1. We had 17 entries.

Question 1 Harry Potter book

Worth 10 points
None

Worth 5 points
Order of the Phoenix (4), Goblet of Fire (5), Prisoner of Azkaban (2), Philosophers Stone (2), Chamber of Secrets (3)

I thought very hard about whether to accept the answer Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which is the name that has been given to the next Harry Potter installment. However as JK Rowlings is still writing it I don't think we can yet call it a book. Had she completed the writing I might have accepted it but as I see it unforeseen circumstance could mean the Rowlings never completes writing the novel. If anyone doesn't agree with this discussion I would be happy to discuss it. I think it is so far the hardest call I have had to make as a quizmaster.

Question 2 Country bordering China

Worth 10 points
Mongolia, North Korea, Afghanistan, Myanmar/Burma

Worth 5 points
Nepal (3), Tajikistan (3), Bhutan (3), Vietnam (2)

I had to disallow Tibet because it is not an independent country but is part of China at least at the moment. The CIA Factbook includes it in China.

Question 3 Element named after a famous person

Worth 10 points
Nobelium, Fermium, Curium, Lawrencium

Worth 5 points
Rutherfordium (3), Einsteinium (4), Seaborgium (2), Meitnerium (2), Bohrium (2)

Question 4 Husband of Zsa Zsa Gabor

Worth 10 points
Frederick Prinz von Anhalt

Worth 5 points
Burhan Belge (2), Herbert Hutner (5), Conrad Hilton (2), George Sanders (4), Michael O'Hara (2)

I received an answer of Merv Griffin. Griffin was never married to Zsa Zsa. He did have a 9 year relationship with Eva Gabor that ended with Eva's death.

I also received a interesting tidbit from ASA - In the divorce settlement between Conrad Hilton and Zsa Zsa he gave her 5000 Gideon Bibles)

Question 5 Track from 'Dark Side of the Moon'

Worth 10 points
Breathe in the Air

Worth 5 points
Us and Them (7), The Great Gig in the Sky (4), Any Colour You Like (3), Brain Damage (2)

Elfwinkle 35
Ozzz2002 35
JaneMarple 35

Theoryman14 30
Spanishliz 30
Leau78 30
Helen295 25
ASA 25
Julia103 25
Santana2002 25
Marchmadness 25
Romeomikegolf 25
Izzi 25
Lothruin 25
Eraserhead 25
Gatsby722 25
BlinkyBill 20

Elfwinkle, JaneMarple and Ozzz2002 each get a point towards their monthly total.

I must apologise for overlooking JaneMarple entry.

She had two 10 point answers Lawrencium for the Element question and 'Breathe in the Air' for the Pink Floyd question. She picked Vietnam for her country which means that that answer was worth 5 points not 10 points..

This means her score was 35 points which means she was also a winner.

I will now correct the post above to include JaneMarple's entry.

So it's almost Monday - perhaps it's time for Round 5 to be posted?

Quote:

  • 1. A two-letter word with no consonants, valid for play in the English version of Scrabble.
  • 2. A National Flag which has a Red background colour.
  • 3. One of the Departments of France.
  • 4. One of the Wives of Henry VIII.
  • 5. A Magical Creature mentioned in any of the first five Harry Potter books, beginning with the letter G.

  • I will close this round on Tuesday evening, GMT.

14 people played the round. Interesting answers all around!

Name one of the Ten Commandments
For 10 points: (and I'm going to abbreviate these...)
Thou shalt not take the name of The Lord in vain, Thou shalt not steal, Honour thy father and mother, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt have no other gods before Me, Thou shalt remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

5 points: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor (3), Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house or wife (3).

One had to be pitched: the Fifth Commandment (not a real answer )

One of Tsar Nicholas Romanov and Alexandra's children
For 10 points: Alexis & Anastasia

    5 points: Maria (2), Tatiana (4) Olga (5)

Oh, and yikes---one player answered GeorgeV (obviously not acceptable)

One of the victims of The Challenger disaster in 1986
For 10 points: Michael J. Smith

    5 points: Judith Resnick (2), Gregory B. Jarvis (3), Ronald McNair (3), Elison S. Onikuza (5)

    German Days Of The Week
Note: first of all, I confess to having misled you all a bit. There are actually 8 correct answers, not the 7 I suggested...
For 10 points: Sonntag, Montag, Sonnabend (that last one is the one I forgot about---just a different way to say Saturday over there), Samstag

    5 points: Donnerstag (2), Freitag (2), Mittwoch (6)

Original "Saturday Night Live" cast members...
And here I thought this would be the easiest for me but it turned out to be the hardest one to verify. Because of the way my question was worded I had to give credit to Albert Brooks because he did have a recurring role (as himself) that first season. Refer to www.imdb.com to check if he was really on the cast list. It says he was. So:
For 10 points: Albert Brooks (that rascal ), John Belushi, Garrett Morris, Gilda Radner, Dan Ayckroyd

5 points: Chevy Chase (2). Jane Curtin (2), Laraine Newman (3)

Two answers were incorrect:Jim Belushi (John's brother) came on the show later as did Chris Farley.

    Final Round 3 Results--->

    JaneMarple---40 points
    ElfTwinkle---40 points

    In descending and alphabetical order:
    spanishliz---35
    Blinkybill---30
    Eraserhead---30
    helen295---30
    izzi---30
    Kuu---30
    ozzz2002---30
    romeomikegolf---30
    Santana2002---30
    Leau78---25
    Theoryman14---20
    marchmadness---15

Another point for Miss Marple and ElfTwinkle . Well done, all!

    editted to correct scores

Gatsby hangs his head in shame . There were actually two players who tied on Round Three for the Best Score and a point. So I'm going up there to fix it now. [My math skills are "challenged" at best...sorry that I messed up.].
