Tis the first week of my new Mystery Photos Contest.

The rules are simple. Try to identify the photo and answer the questions about it. Send your answers to me by PM. Clearly mark the entry as 'Mystery Photos, Week 1' (ot whatever week it is. I don't want answers getting lost in among my Trivia Rounds or any other contest I might run soon.

The question each week will add up to 200 points. Some are easy, some will be much harder. Theone's I consider to be harder will be worth more points.

You have a week to answer. I will generally post the photos late in the afternoon (Australian time).

Unless you have all answers it might be wise not to send your entry too early as I will not accept second entries from people. There is quite a bit of research to be done on the photos, and it wouldn't be good if you send in an entry and than later in the week indentify a photo.

Presumably you can send in a semi-completed entry by the closing date and hopefully that might mean you win anyway.

May I make a suggestion? Is there any chance to advertise the closing date when you first put the clues up?

I think the closing date is implied in the first post, ie one week (approx.) from the date of posting, yes?

I, for one, have sent a partial response, after reading the reminder post yesterday and certainly hope that others have done the same.

This one is very hard. I've been looking at it for days now. Not that "hard" is "bad" but it is a challenge, that's for sure. A friend of mine looked at it and had much of it figured out. But, darn it, that's not fair as she has Euro roots . It is a very good quiz though.

I agree Gatsby. But I have tried, and entered and am hoping.

Kuu's photo's weren't hard. I'm certain I got at least 65% of them right.

That darn ship painting has me confuzzled.

Only one question required a knowledge of Europe and that was easier than sailing with the wind.

I received six entries - and one person managed to get a perfect score

Question 1a and 1b

Two people identified the mystery person as King Abdullah II of Jordan. His mother, Queen Muna, was born Antoinette'Toni' Gardiner. I accepted British and English as her nationality.

Question 2a and 2b

The island is Madasgascar (4 people got this right). One person said Taiwan, which does have a similar shape.

The capital is Antananarivo (3 correct). One person said Antisiranana which is a city on the island, but not the capital.

Question 3a and 3b

Everyone correctly identified the flag of Uruguay. 5 people identified its neighbours as Brazil and Argentina. One person misread the question and gave the capital.

Question 4a and 4b

Everyone identified that this statue, 'The Little Mermaid", is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Every also got Edvard Erichsen/Eriksen as its creator.

Question 5a and 5b

One person idenified the animal as a Dingiso and got the 40 points. I gave 10 points to the person who identified it as a tree-kangaroo. A dingiso is only one of many species of tree-kangaroos. We had a couple of people who thought it was a koala. In the face it does look a bit like a koala nbut koalas are never black and white.

Question 6a and 6b

5 people identified the nobie as High Noon and the same 5 people identified the actors as Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly

Question 7a and 7b

4 people identified Io. One person said Europa. % people were correct in saying it was discovered by Galileo

Question 8a and 8b

Three people identified the painting as The Raft of the Medusa. The same three people were able to tell me that the 'Medusa' sank in 1816.

As I said one person got a pefect score of 200

Kuu, I tried to send you my answers, but it says

I've asked about this quota in the Feedback Forum, but maybe you need to delete some PMs? I'll try to send my answers again later.

Deleting PMs is exactly what Kuu needs to do. Same thing happened to me on the day of the forum upgrade, except I was the one expecting PMs for the Trivia Round. Once I got it down to between 100 & 200 I was able to receive PMs again.

I think the quota is 200. I have just deleted over 100 PMs so you should be able to PM me now.

2b) Akureyri (7) - I also awarded 10 points for the answer of Kapavogur. It seems to be a 'city' very close to the capital and it seems it population if usually counted as an outer suburb of Reykjavik but it does seem to have city status.

4b) Pooka (4) - I did receive other answers of Jackalope and Trickster. However in the movie, Harvey is clearly identified as being a pooka, and a description of what a pooka is also given.

Tulip grew up and is the happily married mother of 4 childrem.

I have reas izzi's sources and will award him his points. I think the difference it dates is the result of a) when the animal was first seen by a westerner (1821) and when it was first scientifically described. I should have worded the question better.

So izzi also had a perfect score of 200

You're are right. You score remains the same (190). I accidently awarded you points for the 1825 date, even though I had marked it wrong.
