Here is an age-old question...

What is everybody’s favorite book, and why?

I personally enjoy Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier. It was thrilling and devious, and gave every characters viewpoint. It was simply marvelous... I give it 5 stars.

Hmmm... I have a lot of favorite books.

The Notebook By Nicholas Sparks
Stargirl By Jerry Spinellie
Family Practice By Bobby Hutchinson
The Baker's Daughter By D.E Stevenson
Bloody Jack By L.A Meyer
Lucia, Lucia By Adriana Trigiani
The In Death Series By J.D Robb

These are just a few of my favorite romance books. I love them. They all have unique styles of writing and you can't put them down.

I cannot list one favorite book. I have several favorites, and here are a few:

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell: I love the characters and the plot of this classic Southern melodrama.

Atonement by Ian McEwan: A newer favorite, I love this book for its commentary on the nature of memory, adolescence, war, and writing. A powerful read.

The Story of Lucy Gault by William Trevor: I love this short, sad novel because it resonates with the pain, sadness, and courage that permeates Irish history. One of the few books that has made me cry.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte: A true Victorian classic, I love this novel for its triumphant and assertive heroine, a true giant in literary history.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee: I love stories that are told from the innocent viewpoint of a child, and this novel is my favorite from that perspective. Just beautiful.

I could go on, but I will stop with these five. And if any of you readers haven't looked into these books, you definitely should.

Hmm...

I love "Emily's Quest" by L.M. Montgomery. It is so well written, and charming.

"A Foreign Field" by Gillian Chan would have to be next on my list. Although it's a book meant for kids ages 10-12, I really enjoy it. It is beautifully written, and reflects real things that happened in the war. It is also good because I can finish it really quick, and have time to read other books.

"Anne of The Island" is probably third on my list. This is also by L.M. Montgomery - I am a dyed-in-the-wool L.M.M. fan. This is also a charming, witty book, an excellent continuation of "Anne of Green Gables" and "Anne of Avonlea"

Well I'm pretty big on fantasy so I'm gonna have to go with Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. But I'd also like to add:

1. A Song of Ice and Fire - George R.R. Martin.
2. The Riftwar Saga - Raymond E. Feist
3. Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
4. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson

LotR, Harry Potter, The Life of Pi, The Earthsea series, the Wheel of Time series, don't even begin to cover it. Mainly Fantasy, but out of the classics, I really like Great Expectations and of course, every book written by Wodehouse.

I seem to have forgotten almost everything written by Ray Bradbury and Mark Twain! "A" favorite book - on a site filled with rabid, hard - core readers? It's a question with no answer, for many of us, I am afraid.

This is SO true. I have a clever plan, though. I will limit myself to books I've read over 100 times and they are in no particular order:

1. Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
2. Testament of Youth, Vera Brittain
3. Bleak House, Charles Dickens
4. Till We Have Faces, C. S. Lewis
5. All of Jane Austen
6. Most of LM Montgomery, especially Rilla of Ingleside
7. Oh Yeah. Into Thin Air - Jon Krakauer

I can't pick just one! It's impossible. So here's my list:
  • The Chalet School series by Elinor M Brent-Dyer
  • What Katie Did - I forget who wrote it
  • The Orchard on Fire by Shena McKay
  • Brother in the Land by Robert Swindells
  • So Much to Tell You by John Marsden
  • Insomnia by Stephen King

Susan Coolidge wrote the What Katy Did series, back in the 1890's, if I remember right.

I absolutely love the Harry Potter series (found them just before the movies were released) and the majority of Agatha Christie books ("And then there were none" has to get a mention as my favourite!). Quite enjoy the Lord of the Rings trilogy and enjoyed both the Chalet School series and most Enid Blyton books when I was younger. The "What Katy Did" series I read, but found them just a bit old fashioned. Impossible to choose my favourite book!

It appears to be the consensus that it's impossible to pick just one favourite. Especially since you love each book for unique and special reasons.
Having said that, I love the following books: (I've bolded the titles in case you want to skip the babbling and just read them. )

Anything Agatha Christie, but Murder on the Orient Express stands out because it was the first one I read when I was about 16 (some 6 or 7 years ago ). As well as "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?" because it was so different from the regular Poirot and Marple books.

The Hobbit- By J.R.R Tolkien

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- By Douglas Addams (anticipating the movie release, though worried it might ruin the book )

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - By Roald Dahl (This one's from my child hood but it is soo great )

Of course there're many others!

The Wish List - Eoin Colfer
Harry Potter series
Bridge to Terabithia - Katherine Paterson
The Thorn Birds - Colleen McCulloch

Beee, I see you added 'So much to Tell You' - excellent book, have you read 'Letters from the Inside' by John Marsden?

The Chosen (Chaim Potok)
To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee)
1984 (George Orwell)

The Outsiders (S.E. Hinton)
Harry Potter
Holes (Louis Sacher)
The Witches (Roald Dahl)
