Is Smiles A Lot a man or a woman?

When Dances With Wolves married Stands With A Fist, it seemed to me that Smiles A Lot was unhappy. I assumed that was because he saved her (him?) at the buffalo hunt and chose her to dig up the rifles at the soldiers' fort when the Pawnee attacked. At the end of the movie when she handed him the retrieved diary, I thought she seemed sad.

The IMDb cast listing says this is a man, but I was under the impression this was a woman. Or maybe I'm remembering the wrong character name for this character. Can anyone offer any help on this?

Smiles a Lot was a male. He was actually a young boy at the time.
