Does anybody know which was the first U.S. administration in which neither the President or the VP had served in the military? I seem to recall once hearing it was Bush-Cheney.

That may be stretching it a little. Bush, who probably had no intention of going to Vietnam, applied for the National Guard and was bumped up the waiting list. Although he did turn up for duty periodically, he went AWOL for over a year, which kinda cancels out any service he did do.

However, I really don't have a problem with that. The military isn't for everyone.
I do have issues with the Bush administration telling fibs about what is *or isn't* in his record.

Please, no political rants. The question you originally asked is valid and a very good one. We will keep searching for an answer.

Here is a list of Presidents that never served in the military:
John Quincy Adams
Martin Van Buren
Millard Fillmore
William Howard Taft
Woodrow Wilson
Warren G. Harding
Calvin Coolidge
Herbert Hoover
William J. Clinton

Now to find out if their vice-presidents never served. I think that we can rule out the Clinton/Gore administration since Gore did serve.

Wrong! Coolidge was Haring's VP, and became president about 2 1/2 years into their term. He was re-elected in 1924, but desided not to runin 1928.
