Ah ha! Found it - well this is what I did anyway to get mine to do the £.
start/ settings/ regional settings and change the country/region to what you want it to be. Will ahve to restart computer to put it into effect.
Hope that helps anyway.

Most keyboards need the lay-out set to US International to function properly. My parents call me every so often to tell me their keyboard is acting up, and every time they've somehow managed to switch the keyboard settings to Dutch, which doesn't work with the lay-out of their keyboard. So try changing the British lay-out to the US International one, that should help.

We NEED the £ sign on the shift of 3. If you are staying on the British one then the \ is to the left of Z, not shift, / is at the far right of the bottom row.
Sounds as if I would have considerable difficulty should I ever locate to another country, you all have messed up keyboards.
I am now wondering if we are doing Romania a dis-service by sending them all our old computers for their schools, we send them hundreds at the time.

even after changing mine is still like that - oh hang on, now I don't know where my back slash is as the hash # has taken it's spot. But the @ is now next to the left enter key instead of above the 2 and the " is now above the two. Can live with those and haven't found anything else too different.

The backslash \ is to the left of the Z key, that is what I said. Hash# is next to the return key and has ~ on the shift. To the left of that key is the ' and @ (on the shift). I might just have to send you an old British keyboard if I can find one that I haven't sent to Romania!

I don't have anything to the left of the Z - my shift key is twokeys long if that makes sense.

It makes sense, we have an extra wide shift key on the right hand side.
I will see if I can find you an old keyboard.

If you have a minute or two to spare why not just hit every key then do a shift on every key - all will be revealed.
Quote:
I would hit the key next to the Z a lot - took some getting used to
Two things spring to mind, first is you found the \ key without assistance and second, why were you wanting to type Zs? Ah, you mean instead of the Shift key, I see.
If you really want the \ then try Alt 92.

(Alt)ernatively, there is always the Windows Character Map. It has just just about any symbol in it. The one you want can be copied from there and then pasted into the text.

`¬"£$%^&*()_+=-0`?><,./@:;'}{[]~# Nope no backslash - but still 3 types of brackets... \ that was with the alt. Tellies - I couldn't find the £ on the character map, it was proving most elusive.

Thanks everyone for helping. My keyboard is back to the way it was. You can always rely on Funtrivia members to help you out.
I even asked this question to a site which specifically helps with computer problems and they couldn't figure it out, they just told me to buy a new keyboard but I knew that wasn't the problem.

Now here's someone in command of their keyboard. It must take quite a bit of button hitting to get that lot to happen!
