Has any here had a chance to try it yet? It's google's new e-mail, with a whole gigabyte of storage! It looks really cool. It even has an e-mail search feature. There's just one catch...you have to be invited to use it. I was, but I can't get it set up because the server is temporarily unavailible. I'm sure you know how that works.

I'm using gmail, have been for about two weeks. It seems really good, got lots of space to store messages, so I no longer have delete any more messages. The thing that I find most useful is that it groups your messages are grouped with its replies, so it reads like a conversation.

I filled in an application ages ago when they asked people to respond if they were interested, I heard no more.

I got my account set up. So far so good, but I have a question that maybe treble can answer. Is there a way to just go to your contact list, check off a bunch of names, and send them all one e-mail?

I found this in the 'help' sectition,
Quote:

While Gmail does not currently support this functionality, we are testing many new features to improve the Gmail service.
In the meantime, you can use Gmail's auto-complete feature to address a message to multiple contacts.

Just enter the first few letters of a contact's name, and select the address from the drop-down menu that appears in the 'To:' field. Please note that, when addressing a message to multiple contacts, each address must be followed by a comma.

hope that helps

Sue how long ago was it you filled out the application for gmail?

More than its 1 Gb storage, the best part of GMail is its incredible, un-matched speed. I also like the fact that there are no graphical advertisements.

One thing that rather irritates me is the assumption made that the user is on "first-name" terms with everyone in his/her Contacts (i.e. address book). For example, I have a teacher Ms. <first name> <last name> who I write to occasionally, and it feels odd when I am given the option to "Invite <first name> to Gmail!" There is just no option to give your own nick-names to people on your Contacts list.

I've been really happy with Gmail so far. It's weird to not constantly be throwing things away. I do recognize however that there are still things that need to be worked out. So far I don't like that you can't change the topic on a reply. I guess that's why the few of us are testing.

I mentioned to a friend that I now have Gmail (thanks to a very kind person inviting me to join) so can accept large files without problems, she hadn't heard of it so did a search and much to our amazement you can bid for an invitation on ebay!

Yes, there are many ways to get gmail invites now. I found a website where you can sell them to the site for $1 and the site proceeds to cell them for $2. Creative, huh? You can also participate in piramid scemes and a website where you can tell people why you should have one. If anyone wants one, I have 3 right now, so pm me. First come first serve.

Gmail is definitely the best e-mail service.

Perks:
1. It's free if you can get an invite
2. 1000 megabytes of space(1 gig)
3. Incredibly fast

I haven't found any bugs yet, it really is great.

I think they plan on making in POP3 compatible soon.

If anyone needs an invite, I would be more than happy to give you one. Every time I use all of my invites, they give me more.

Their system checks to see if you use it a lot, and if you do, they give you more invites to pass out.

There are a bunch of sites where you can exchange something for a gmail invite - exchnaging something also includes things like sending 'warm fuzzies' or homemade cookies!

I'll see if I can find the one for the domain set up for this purpose...

Got it. If you want a gmail account, try here:

www.gmailswap.com/

Here's from the index page: "Want to get a taste of the sweetest lil' net app this side of, uh, google? There are two things to try: 1) Register, then add your plea to the looking-for-gmail Swap List - offer something neat (maybe just your eternal gratitude), and hope you'll find a kindly patron. 2) Browse the offering-gmail Swap List - maybe you've got something that an invitation-holder wants."

So you can get a gmail account for free. I think my boyfriend got one, actually...

Yes, same with me, just send a private message with your email, and I'll get one to you.

This thread proves what a good bunch of people we have here at Funtrivia. Google didn't intend people to sell the invitations but to give them, just as you are offering them here. I hope those who are selling them don't ruin it for other people by making Gmail ease up on the distribution of invitations to prevent this practice.

I am fresh out of invites at the moment, but I am sure I will get more soon. They usually give out like 6 at a time.

I've noticed that I've never had more than 6 invites with me, but if I use any one of the 6 I have, I get a new one replacing it in at most 1-2 days.

I'm also open if anyone is interested in an account.

This is probably a stupid question.............

How do I access Gmail once I've signed out? I don't have Google as my homepage and there's no icon on my desktop.
I did a search for Gmail through my homepage (Yahoo) and got it that way. Is this the only way I can do it?

You could bookmark it once you have the page open. If you were to type www.gmail.google.com/gmail you will find yourself in the correct place.

It was SO useful yesterday as my daughter wanted to send some photographs which were of fairly high definition, she was able to send all 4 at the same time, wonderful.

Thanks Harish.

yes, bookmarking it is the way to go, until they make it POP3 compatible, and then you'll be able to check it through Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird.

The highest you will get is six at a time. They have a good reason, as people who sell them would completely ruin the process. They meant for them to be invites, not items for sale.

Uh-Oh!!!

I don't know why this happened, but for some reason, I got what appeared to be three spam messages in my inbox on gmail, I deleted them immediately.

It may be time for them to upgrade their spam protection...

You can also just go to gmail.com and check. I tried to set up Gmail through Thunderbird and wondered why I was unsuccessful. I can't even do that with Yahoo though. Can anyone explain?

I use Thunderbird but haven't got Gmail or Yahoo so can't offer any advice directly. You may like to read this from the Thunderbird forum where several programs are listed. FreePOPs is mentioned as being a good program in a couple of threads over there.

I think the reason you can't access Gmail through Thunderbird is that it is not yet POP3 compatible.
